Kiss The Ring sounds almost identical to the way it sounded at The Roxy in 2009, which is really cool! I love Make Room!!!!, but wow, yeah, I love even more the bits they took from it to make a few of the songs in DD.
I think especially with CW4, maybe because of Make Room!!!! specifically, it is the most clear why they scrapped this album. I get why every single person who got an early listen and reviewed said it was going to be the best rock album of 2009 (and then 2010 when it didn't get released). The songs are really incredible! But they're all so... singular. There's nothing cohesive about them at all. And a cohesive album, something that tells a story, is the ESSENCE of MCR, and it makes so much sense that they said NO and started over. It's also really fucking incredible that they did do that. I'm glad they're releasing them though, because seriously, GREAT SONGS! I can't wait for the last set... and then NEW NEW music after that (get back to LA, Frank, come on).
I totally agree - these are all great songs, and I'm sure that they would have figured out SOME way to put them all together so that it felt more cohesive than they do released like this, but it wouldn't have had the solid ALBUM feel that all of their records do, including Bullets. And seriously I am so fucking proud of them for being BRAVE enough to make that decision. Fucking amazing.
Yes definitely. And lol yeah, Bullets is definitely not as tight as a narrative like the subsequent three albums, but it still tied together a lot more than these songs have so far (and I don't think 2 more will change that at all). Yes, SO FUCKING BRAVE. Ugh I love them and how much their art means to them, which makes me feel less silly (if I was inclined to feel silly about it in the first place) about how much it means to ME.
Lol, I'm always saying, "Fraaaank, come onnnn, go back to LA!" too. xD It's like we know when he does, it'll most probably mean something new in the making and gaaaaaaah. Want.
And I agree. Now hearing these songs, part of me goes "WHYYYY?" because they're great (and as much as I loved Danger Days, gotta admit these are most my thing). So the only reason I can think for them starting all over, is that the songs were, like you said, too singular. And that didn't feel like them, like what they're used to putting out. I'm still fucking glad they've decided to release them 'cause daaamn, boys. They're GOOD.
Haha yes. As soon as he goes back, we'll know they're starting up again with MCR5!
They are all such GREAT songs! I'm so glad we're getting to hear them, even though I'm also really glad they didn't put out this album and did DD instead. :D
Keep in mind that "Conventional Weapons" as it was being prepared to be released would include these songs as well as Bulletproof Heart/Trans Am, Only Hope, Death Before Disco, and Save Yourself. I think when you add those four into the mix, there is a little more cohesiveness. Bulletproof-Only Hope-Save Yourself-Ambulance all seem like the core pieces of the album to me. Then you've got Boy Division-Death Before Disco-Kiss the Ring that kind of go together, Tomorrow's Money and Make Room kind of match up, and then World Is Ugly & Light Behind. Depending on what Surrender and Burn Bright are like, I don't think maybe this was just a messy collection of songs at all, the more I think about it.
I definitely thought these songs lacked cohesiveness too, but when I started to think about it a little more, it didn't seem that way at all. I think once CW5 comes out I'm going to try and build a playlist with these 10 songs and the ones that made it through to Danger Days but in a different order.
I think that there are definitely three or four groups of kinds of songs, like you said, and that there's a cohesiveness to sound in those bunches. It's hard to think of the four songs that ended up on DD as not always being a part of what DD became, but it definitely helps to understand what they were working on. But I think without some kind of narrative arc the transition would still be really harsh from group to group. And that's true of DD itself--the Dr. D stuff definitely smooths it out.
I'm really curious to see what the final two songs sound like. Should really impact what that playlist ends up being!
I feel like Surrender the Night is gonna be a huge, Famous Last Words type of jam, and Burn Bright is going to be a Kids from Yesterday type song. That's based solely on the titles haha
