They definitely had ~plans, though. Involving white hair and katana.

I'm 99% sure it was the vid after SING that they meant. I'd go find the interview to make sure, but don't have the energy.

Katana = During the making of SING clip they put out, Gerard was holding the Japanese lady's sword and saying "We get to use this next time."

They also said we were going to find out why Grace was so important.

So while they definitely didn't have a script written out or whatever, they at least had ~plans. I mean, it's not that hard. I've seen a ton of fanfic that write out a plausible next chapter - I'm sure if MCR put their minds to work it wouldn't exactly be that hard.
