Napolean Dynamite had the same kinda hype around it after people saw it, and I learned my lesson there, I didn't like ND, so I will just skip these 2 movies as well.
The problem with Napoleon Dynamite (which, as it were, I adore) is that it is a character-driven piece in which all the characters are one-dimensional. I guess you could say that it's of the "It's so bad it's good" vein; but how could you not love a movie with quotes like "If you vote for me, all your wildest dreams will come true?"
At any rate, to offer the same treatment of "it's popular so I won't like it" to Eternal Sunshine and more importantly Million Dollar Baby is innapropiate at best.
I actually read the screenplay for ES for about a year before it was released. And let me tell you, there were many changes that more than annoyed me. However, it still the the deconstruction of the romantic love story in a trippy setting that endears ES. You REALLY should give it a try.
Moreover, I was actually very much against MDB come Oscar time because I was of The Aviator camp (another movie you HAVE to see) and threfore felt betrayed when MDB won. Though I still prefer TA, MDB is the only movie to make me actually weep from watching
