WTF? 6am and I'm awake and mentally raring to go. What is that all about...? This week has seen sublime & ridiculous in equal measure...
Work continues to surprise and horrify. Having finally got to interview stage (and if my e-mail from HR is right, no more assessment centres for me this year!) the team who want to fill the post pull the job the next day. I pop over to talk to one of my interviewers who didn't know the job had been pulled. The person who's sat next to her is the current temp who's been rocking out in post for the last eight months. The day after that, he's told his contract expires at the end of the month and he has to train a newly recruited senior member of staff. The reason for all of this? We need to save money. Explain to me how getting someone senior on more pay to do the same job qualifies for that?
Life on fewer chemicals seems to suit me. People have already remarked how much more energy I seem to have. This is both blessing and curse at the moment as there is just so very much going on. If I can keep this up, I may be able to get clean this year. That would make me a very happy man indeed. Swimming has been almost as successful as last week. I'm finding my threshold and I think in the next month I shall have to push again. Healthier me is enjoying this.
I have managed to work out how to keep my inner entrepreneur happy as well. People are buying stuff (waves to
msieu_severin over in Portland readying for the big journey and shamelessly plugs his
C-SWAT cap and
T-shirt at the same time) and I'm considering scaling up my efforts. I've worked out how I can balance my need to create this stuff with the need to spend money to do the job properly and somehow remain in the black doing so (a cunning trick involving Paypal, cashback sites and the need for new clothes and music).
Have had my mind blown in the lands of IT. Imagine
this combined with
this combined with
this. Your own home server with NAS storage in something you can fit on a bookshelf. The gratuitous part of me wants to add a USB hub on the top for a wireless relay and other peripherals. If you really want to be gratuitous, add
this and your networking fetish is complete.
Penny Arcade are on a roll. With inspiration this
freaky, you can't fail.
And I've just discovered how relatively cheap it is to become your own vanity press. Sure the ISBNs are the most expensive part of the deal but TBH the idea of having them is just too cool not to. Your own book. Say it with me. Your own book. Yes you can download it in PDF/HTML/however the hell you like it these days but bibliophilia is a common habit among many of my friends and wouldn't it be nice to do this for your game system? The kick of having someone buy your stuff from Spirit Games is something I'd like to know about.
On the other hand,
Download Festival this year really requires my presence. No really. I know the last time I went to Donington was last century but this lineup is something really quite special.
So June is shaping up to be just crazy.
Week 1 - Portugal.
Week 2 - Download.
Week 3 - Stargate (may have to skip this one for sanity's sake).
Week 4 - Cyprus.
I think I need July to recover. No wait, I have a birthday then. Ha ha, thought I could get away with relaxation. D'oh!
Double-Edged Sword hangs over me with deadlines. I need to write a couple of research missions and make good on a promise involving the Meow Mix song and the last event's referees (excluding young
greennumpty of course who I would like to ref it, ensuring he gets the full effect by proxy.
Keep calm and carry on, like the poster says, right?
