unexpected surprises

So far, it's all been unexpected good.

I didn't know what to expect with Hooters. I knew that paulbroz said the food was good and oh my it was. I didn't expect well-lit venues nor did I expect smiling emo kids. The quesadilla I had was very nice and absintheskiss was almost drowned in nachos. Following a BBQ rib block and enough curly fries and celery dips to ensure torpor in the manner of certain tyrannosaurs. I had two three word sentences for dessert. Key lime pie. With butterscotch sauce. And it was good. Service was prompt, smiling and polite. They must get a metric assload of idiots who try their luck but the whole experience was just too nice to be anything less than pleasant back.

Taken is a revenge movie executed brilliantly. Liam Neeson is a former special operative whose family broke under the weight of his absence and who has chosen obscurity to remain close to his dar. His estranged wife (a very convincing Famke Jannsen) helps con him into letting his seventeen-year old daughter go to Paris with her friend alone - inevitably bad things happen and they're both inevitably taken, he announces to the abductor that if they do not release her, they will be found and killed. The kidnapper, clearly unaware of his role in the scheme of things utters a mocking 'Good Luck' before the line goes dead.

This movie despite what looks like a linear structure has some twists. Bryan MIlls (Neeson's character) is pragmatic and while there are stretches of belief they are minimal (mostly deus ex machinae around his Parisian connections he's got in Paris) and serve to advance the plot. The villains of the piece are believable, there's use of technology and nice misdirection. The fighting sequences are utterly brutal and willing to use the environment to punctuate the point that Mills is taking no prisoners. Well worth seeing. If you want to play a vengeful vigilante watching this may help.

As an anniversary present, I bought absintheskiss the Seasick Steve album "I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left." If you want down and dirty hobo blues, you listen to this. He can handle a guitar and there's a lot of surprising collaborators on this. This is craft with love and just that little bit different. If you want to know what he sounds like then thank YouTube for this video.
