Here is something about the 'mystery'

Russians are one of the most competitive and historically healthy nations... All what happened in XX century did not break its backbone...

Big image is here. Really worths some attention...

Why photo of fat kids playing american football would "worth some attention" ?

good looking, typically slavic face... perfect childish smile. i amazed how self-confident he remains holding the MVP title of the final game of the national championship... no boasting, no self-promotion. pure joy of doing something all kids like to do...

why football - it is only my choice... put rugby, boxing, judo, gymnastics, dancing whatever instead...

I don't see, how _american football_ player could "symbolize the very essence of Russia". Also, holding diploma, so everyone could see it, is a little bit too much for "no self-promotion".

It's apparently a photo of a team which has just won some local championship -- they all have medals over their necks and the boy is holding a diploma of "the most useful player" of the team.

:) it's about "holding the diploma, so everyone could see it":

see, it's just this particular moment after the game, when everybody is making photos and players show their medals and dimplomae. Most probably the one who made the photo asked the boy to hold up the diploma.

:) I actually think that compared to (some) american athlets, this boy is an example of modesty, no-boasting and no-self-promotion.

that wasn't ment as an insult! (although admittedly it might sound like that)

You're, actually, right - (some of) american athletes are evil.

:) oh, national championship... well, you know, "local" and "global" -- these are relative concepts.

:) I'd say american football is quite a local marginalized game compared to what happens now in Germany.
