Why, Why, Why?

What in the *hell* is going on?  I have read not one, not two, but *five* stories in the last couple of days that consistently use "then" instead of "than".
Is this a particularly confusing bit of grammar?
Note: All of these stories were in the BtVS fandom.  Is it maybe a generational thing?
