Mercedes couldn't sit at home doing nothing. Not only was Blaine hurt, with a distraught Kurt, but there were other people she knew hurt in the crash. It didn't take her long to make her way up to the hospital, mainly hunting for Kurt, but trying to be there for whoever of her friends needed her.
She found her way to the waiting room, spotting the familiar figure of Sam easily. She hurried over to him, sitting down next to him. "Any news?" she asked, looking at just how tired he looked.
Sam shook his head but then cleared his throat as he glanced at her. "Um, no... yes. Sort of?" he responded. His brain felt like it was short-circuiting with the worry.
"I'm waiting on news about Mike. His folks are in there somewhere with him, as far as I know. Mrs Chang is going to fill me in when she can. I have news about some of the Warblers. Finn filled me in on what he could. Nick hit his head and tore some ligaments in his wrist. Lucas just has some cuts and bruises. The Scottish dude, Callum, was trapped in the front seat with Blaine, he hurt his back and broke his ankle. Jeff's doing okay as far as I can see. Blaine's the worst. He's been moved to the High Dependency Unit, but I don't know what his injuries are yet. I've only seen Kurt with his folks in passing. A-At least Mike wasn't driving..." he added shakily. He couldn't deny that had been a huge worry in his mind since he heard about the crash and in the wake of Mike's drunk Facebooking.
"Who was?" Mercedes asked, trying to take in all that Sam had said. "And what the hell was Mike doing..." She cut off what she was going to say. Recriminations wouldn't do anyone any good, not now. They just had to be strong, and help each other out. She could find Kurt later, but Sam looked terrible, and she was here, right now. He'd given her her prom dream - a date to the prom, and a dance, and they'd become friends. He looked like he needed a friend here and now. "Do you know who else was in the car with him?"
Sam rubbed a hand over his face to try and wipe away some of the anxiety. He was so scared for Mike, it felt like his heart was lodged up in his throat. "Strando. He's been charged. I don't know what the hell Mike was doing, I wish I did. I wish he would talk to me, but he hasn't in weeks. We just... we had a falling out..."
"Um, Karofsky, Azimio and Parkinson. I don't know why the hell he would get into a car with those idiot sober, let alone drunk. He didn't speak to me all night, I don't know if he spoke to anyone else, but none of this makes sense. And Blaine and his friends, of all people. This is horrible," he fretted.
Mercedes just nodded numbly. Strando. She shouldn't have been surprised, just couldn't figure out what Mike was doing in a car with Strando and Karofsky. "What happened?" she asked, worried about Sam. "It really isn't like him, not when you, Kurt, Finn, Tina and the others are about."
"Just... stuff..." Sam wasn't trying to be an intentional pain in the ass. He just didn't know how to explain it without making Mike even more mad at him. "To be honest, I don't exactly. I have my suspicions, but we just fell out after Nationals and if it's what I think it is, I understand, but I just wish he had spoken to me about it rather than ending up in a mess like this. He shouldn't have been in that car. He just shouldn't have. I should have gone to him as soon as I knew he was drunk and made sure he got home safely."
Mercedes looked at him, pursing her lips slightly. "It's a shame. You pair were such good friends," she said. "Don't beat yourself up, Sam. You weren't to know that he'd do something like this. Sure, he shouldn't have been in the car, but do you really think you could have stopped him?"
"I should have known, Mercedes," Sam said quietly as he twisted his fingers together in front of him. "At the very least, I should have tried harder to talk to him before it got to this. Mike isn't the sort to just go out on the booze with those idiots. He isn't reckless, he plays on the safe side. This isn't like him, and a lot of that is my fault. Now he's hurt, Blaine's hurt, and Kurt's angry about that. I might not have been able to stop him getting into the car, but I should have been able to stop him getting to that point at all."
"Sam, how you can every know what's going on in someone's head?" Mercedes asked. "You can doubt yourself as much as you like, but you don't know what drove him to it, even if you have got some idea. You can't blame yourself for Strando's idiocy. He would have driven that car, Mike or no Mike, and Blaine would still have gotten hurt." She drew in a sharp breath. "Just give me five minutes in a room with that idiot."
She found her way to the waiting room, spotting the familiar figure of Sam easily. She hurried over to him, sitting down next to him. "Any news?" she asked, looking at just how tired he looked.
