Mike, but open to anyone justwants2dance July 4 2011, 11:32:17 UTC
At hearing the schmoopy love song, Mike reflexively scrunched his nose up and made a soft ugh sound to himself. This was going to suck. It felt like everyone was hooked up lately, and he had been in a weird, faintly rebellious mood since everything that happened in New York... whilst still trying to avoid Sam so he didn't need to face up to what was going on in his head and his heart. He was usually so easy-going, and he wasn't content having this confusion spinning around inside him lately. He just wanted to have funBut how was he supposed to have fun with everyone making gooey eyes at each other on the dancefloor. He watched as Blaine coaxed Kurt onto the dancefloor, both smiling adoringly at each other and then Mike's eyes accidently went to Sam standing talking to a bunch of the guys from the football team from school. Their gaze met briefly before Mike broke it, turning away pointedly to take a large mouthful of his Coke. Someone should ban all slow songs ever and they should all play Pin the Tail on the Donkey instead. Or ( ... )

Holly came up beside Mike and slapped a hand on his shoulder as she grinned. "I'd ask you to dance, but that could be viewed as inappropriate. Why are you not out there tearing the dancefloor up, Mike Chang? Way I remember it, your moves were smooth."

"Everyone sucks," was Mike's ineloquent response as he continued to faintly scowl at the couples all wrapped up and dancing to the slow song.

It might seemed like he was still bitter over the break-up with Tina, but it had nothing to do with that. In fact, he hadn't been bothered by it at all and had it was mutual. It was another member of ND driving him up the wall and making him down on anything romantic and cute. It was the first time he had ever experienced feelings like this, so he didn't know how to deal with them.

"Can I just say ouch!? That hurts, kiddo. Right here," she replied as she tapped her chest where her heart was. "I do not suck. At least not in the way you're implying," Holly added, not being able to resist.

But she held her hands up. "I'm sorry, I know. Bad, bad substitute teacher. Too many days spent around teenage boys. So what's the real problem. And remember, this is me you're talking to."

Mike did then manage to tear his eyes away from giving every dancing couple the Evil Eyeball and finally processed that he was having a conversation with Miss Holliday.

He blinked, and then looked sheepish before shifting his weight from one foot to another. "I don't have any problems, just..." He waved his hand at the dancers. "Slow dances suck. It's alright if you're doing it with someone and doing the whole eye sex thing like Kurt and Blaine are, but when you're not, it sucks."

Holly looked away from Mike to observe Kurt and Blaine before she quickly looked away. "Yes, well, not sure that's something I should be watching. Or enjoying. But trust me, I more than understand. It never is fun without someone to connect to." She frowned a little. "No Tina?"

"Tina?" Mike shook his head and waved his hand. "Oh, no no. We split up a few months ago. Things just weren't feeling right, and I'm not exactly the most deep person in the world, so I was all for ending it before it got complicated. I think she's probably going to end up back with Artie anyway. they hang out a lot... I think. I've been a bit distracted lately to really know much."

Holly bit her lip briefly. "I'm sorry, I didn't realise. Not that it's really my business who you're dating. But, y'know, makes for an awkward conversation when I'm not in the loop on these things." She gave him another smile before nudging his shoulder. "You sound like me. I do love a good shiny object."

Mike shrugged. "It's okay. I'm not bummed about it. I think it just ran it's course. It was sort of superficial and all about the making out to start out with anyway. When we had to start thinking about the relationship stuff, we were bitching at each other more than we should have been."

At the mention of the shiny, Mike accidentally let his eyes fall on Sam again. He wasn't shiny, but he gave nice cuddles. He listened. He didn't judge. They could still hang out and be mates and have a laugh. At least, until Mike crapped himself about everything. When Sam glanced over and caught Mike looking at him, Mike turned to face Holly with a small frown. "I mean, um... she was... we... what were we talking about?" he asked in bewilderment.

"That's a really mature way to approach the end of a relationship, especially at your age. I don't think I ever had the right head when it came to break ups. I was always the one to cut ties and move on without a second thought."

Holly didn't miss where Mike's gaze had gone, nor did she miss the speechlessness that followed. She looked at him in amusement. "We were talking about shiny objects. Though apparently your distraction is more blond than shiny."

"Mature or immature? Some would argue I should have been an adult to stick around and deal with problems like one, but Tina and me are too different. We want different things. It was just hormones and really, I'm not a fan of complications. My head goes screwy when things happen out of my control," Mike admitted. Other than when he danced, he was probably what some would call shy. He didn't say much. He sat back and observed, and spoke up if he needed to, but he wasn't all that into the spotlight. He was happy to let those who wanted it have it.

The look he gave Holly was just plain fear. "We just had a fight, that's all." They didn't even do that, though. Mike just started ignoring Sam without explanation.

"Mature. And I know how you feel, trust me. But if you two weren't on the same wavelength then of course there'll be clashes. It's how it goes. Forcing something to work is why people tend to land themselves in worse situations. That's when the really messy break-ups happen." Holly was hardly the relationship expert, but she did know a thing or two from experience.

Holly pulled her mouth to the side as she pointed at Mike. "I don't believe you," she said in a sing-song voice. "But nice try."

Mike shook his head. "We weren't, once the initial haze of making out wore off. It got sort of boring for both of us. She was closer with Artie. I always seemed to understand my, um, mates better than Tina really. It sounds harsh, but we're still friends."

He swallowed, and had a drink from his Coke to wet his dry mouth. "Okay, we didn't fight. That was the worst part. A fight would have been easier."

Holly sighed. "Well, that is the danger of hooking up just for the making out. It's easy for the fireworks to just fizzle if there's nothing else to back it up." She narrowed her eyes a little at his choice of words. "As long as you're not heartbroken. I know how much that can hurt when you're young."

"Then what happened?"

"No, really not heartbroken. It wasn't even really love. It didn't get to that point, it was just fun to start with. Then it fizzled. Yeah, I've seen that going around... Glee Club seems notorious for epic breaking up," Mike mumbled.

He stuffed his hands into his pockets and shuffled on the spot restlessly. He kicked his toe against the floor. "I... don't know how much to really say."

Holly nodded. "I have never seen so much drama in a club not actually designed for it. I can't even begin to pretend to know who's with who any more. I feel like any time I go away, there's just all this insane partner swapping. No offence. I'm glad you escaped it."

Holly drew her eyebrows together as she nudged him gently. "It's okay, you don't have to. I'm here any time you do need to talk."
