Brittany sucked in a breath that bordered a gasp as Santana abruptly stepped away from her. Instantly, the blonde missed the contact and her heart clenched with sadness. But she had to do this. She had to. Even if there was a really big part of her that just wanted to give in and tell Artie she couldn't do it, she wasn't strong enough. Then again, she had just said no and she never thought she would ever be able to do that. Brittany's brow furrowed and her lips pulled downward into a frown as Santana said it was 'fine', even though her tone and demeanor said otherwise. But just as quickly as she'd let that small amount of vulnerability show, it was gone with a smile replacing it. One that even Brittany knew wasn't completely genuine.

"Yeah." Brittany answered, forcing a smile of her own. She hated this. How tense and awkward things were between them when it used to be so comfortable and natural. But Santana had herself to blame for that, Brittany tried to reason with herself. Still, she didn't like being mean to her or hurting her in any way. "I'm really hungry." She mused as she started to walk down the hallway. "We should get something to eat. I think my mom is cooking something gross, but I can't remember what it is."

Santana was hit with the strongest urge in the world to just apologize. She knew, and had known the second she did it, that she was making a big deal out of nothing. She could have just asked Brittany to choose another song instead of freaking out on her because it was a big lesbian proclamation song. Maybe she and Brittany would have won the competition if they'd just chosen another song and worked their hardest on it. She and Mercedes had put so much work into their duet and Quinn and Sam's lame-ass performance had still won. Maybe she and Britt would've won. She shook her head slightly to dispel those thoughts, just in time to hear Brittany talking about being hungry.

Santana bit back a sigh. After being rejected like that, she wasn't sure her little facade would last through a dinner with Brittany. She looked at the blonde carefully before looking back down the hallway and giving a short nod. "Yeah. What do you want?" she asked quietly, pushing open the door that would lead them out to the parking lot.

"I don't know." Brittany said as they exited the school, making their way out to the parking lot. She shivered a bit as the cool air hit her skin, wishing she would've remembered to bring her jacket. She always forgot it. Well, honestly, she always forgot a lot of things, but right now her jacket was what she was thinking about. Next time she would have to put it in her bag so she wouldn't forget it. "Ooh, we could get ice cream!" She nodded eagerly. "Or like, a sundae or something. We could totally share it!"

Yeah, she was acting like that incident in the hall hadn't just happened. But, it was easier that way.

"Britt, if you're not gonna eat your mom's dinner, you need real food." Santana looked at Brittany with a tired smile, burying the urge to go for another kiss. One rejection in a night was enough for her. "We can get ice cream or something after dinner. Where do you wanna go? Or should we pick something up?" She was always semi-mothering Brittany, because the Pierces kind of sucked at it.

Brittany scrunched her nose up, she didn't want real food, she wanted ice cream. But she knew if she wanted ice cream, she was going to have to eat real food first. Nobody cared at her house, she could eat ice cream or gummi bears and no one would even notice. Most of the time anyway. Sometimes her mom did make them all eat dinner together, but usually what she cooked was gross. At least to Brittany it was.

"I don't care." She shrugged, finally glancing over at Santana as they made their way to her car. "What do you want to do?" As usual, she was defaulting to Santana to make the decisions. She wasn't supposed to be doing that anymore! Old habits die hard though.

Santana was completely unsurprised by Brittany's response. Brittany always turned to her to make decisions, and most of the time, she didn't mind, because she knew Brittany had a hard time deciding for herself. But now it was a little bit annoying. She was sixteen; she needed to be making decisions for herself. Hell, she'd made a decision herself when she'd done all this shit with Artie. Santana clenched her jaw a bit and unlocked her car, grabbing her bag and Brittany's and tossing them in the trunk. "You need to decide for yourself," she said, a little too sharply, sliding into the driver's seat.

As Santana snapped at her, Brittany frowned deeply and stood there for a minute before finally sliding into the passenger side of the car. Securing the seat belt, she sat there quietly for a minute before speaking up. "You can just take me home." She said, not looking over at Santana, but out her window instead. This was a bad idea and now she just wanted to go home.

Santana sighed, backing out of the parking lot. She just kept fucking up and hurting Brittany's feelings, and she was really beginning to hate herself for it. If she wanted Brittany to leave Wheels and be with her again, she needed to behave and be nice.

"Babe, no. I'm sorry. I'll take you to Breadstix, alright? Or Applebee's or something?" she offered.

Brittany kept her gaze fixed on the scenery outside her window, not daring a look over at Santana. This was so hard! Harder than she thought it would be. She almost pulled her phone out to text Artie for some kind of moral support or whatever it was called. The blonde could feel herself faltering and she needed his pep talk right now to remind her she couldn't give in. But she didn't do it. She didn't really have a chance before Santana spoke again.

Turning to look over at her, Brittany studied her for a minute. God, Santana was so super hot and Brittany got those butterflies she always got whenever she was around her. "You don't have to." She finally said, regaining a little of her resolve. "I can just eat what my mom's fixing even if it is gross."

"I am not such a huge bitch that I'm gonna make you eat whatever shit your mother cooks," Santana replied. She knew from experience that when Mrs. Pierce decided she was going to make dinner, it didn't come out as anything even remotely appetizing. And she needed to make up for being such a giant bitch -- twice in one night. "I'll take you to Applebee's, alright? They have good food." Maybe not fantastic but hundreds times better than the food she'd be getting at home.

"Good, because that would really suck." Brittany replied. It was true, her mom really wasn't that great of a cook. But sometimes she would still eat it, just so she wouldn't hurt her feelings. She had a feeling her dad and her little sister did the same. Nobody wanted to tell her how disgusting it really was. If Brittany knew how to cook and could be trusted alone in the kitchen without some sort of disaster happening, she would totally cook for her family. Thankfully more often than not, Santana rescued her from having to eat whatever nightmare her mom tried to fix.

Nodding, the smile returned to Brittany's face and she actually allowed herself to meet Santana's eyes. "Applebee's would be awesome! Can we tell them it's my birthday again so we can get a free desert to share?"

Santana had to grin at that. She knew the servers no longer bought that it was either of their birthdays, but if they got the right server, the guy who wouldn't stop staring at her boobs even before the surgery, they'd get whatever dessert Brittany wanted. "Sure, Britt," she agreed easily, pulling into the Applebee's parking lot.

Brittany's smile grew and she clapped her hands excitedly. The smallest things made her happy. And that, in turn, made her forget she'd been upset just minutes before. As they parked, Brittany climbed out of Santana's car and waited at the front of the car for her. Once she'd joined her, Brittany started to reach for her hand, but pulled away quickly when she remembered she couldn't do that anymore. "Sorry." She mumbled, frowning to herself as they reached the door and she pulled it open so Santana could go in first.

Santana made sure her car was locked and paused slightly when Brittany tried to reach for her. She moved through the door that Brittany was holding for her and reached back to snatch up the blonde's hand. "Swear I won't try to make out with you again," she said lightly, though really that was definitely on her mind. "We can hold hand, B. It's nothing we haven't done before." She wasn't surprised Brittany would think it was bad, though, after ht way Santana had jerked away back at school. She lightly squeezed the blonde's hand and held up two fingers at the hostess who immediately led them to a booth.

Brittany gave a weak smile as Santana said she wouldn't try to make out with her again, but really, that's all she wanted. She just knew she couldn't do that. She had to stay strong. Even though, being with her, all Brittany could think about was kissing her. It had been way too long since she had and she missed it. She missed her. "I know." The blonde said quietly, as she looked down at their hands. Santana was right, it wasn't anything they hadn't done before. But, there was very little they hadn't done before. Did that mean they could do that stuff too and it would be okay? No. Brittany told herself. They couldn't.

Letting Santana pull her along as the hostess showed them their table, Brittany couldn't help but smile a little. She'd missed this. As they reached their booth, she slid in opposite Santana and immediately reached for the menu. She didn't know half the words on it, but she was totally trying to prove she didn't need Santana to read it to her or well, to do anything. It was her way of showing her how she could do it on her own. Even if she couldn't.
