I live in the Information Age, Rachel thought bitterly as she pulled another book off the shelf. So why on earth am I not allowed to use the internet as a source? She was never that interested in research papers in the first place, but not even being allowed to use Google to ( Read more... )

When it came right down to it, Charlotte was bored. It never sat well with her to wait around for things, and a weekly family dinner with her uncles and her cousin was really no exception. After vocal lessons, she wasn't in much of a mood to do any sort of homework, though she knew she could be working on her assignment for history and possibly finding a new monologue for auditions. It just wasn't appealing ( ... )

Rachel looked up in irritation at the interruption, prepared to snap at whoever had dared to interrupt her. She softened slightly when she saw that it was Charlotte -- but not that much. "I'm working on my history assignment, obviously," she said shortly, turning back to her homework resolutely. "And as our teacher has decided to revert back to the time of the Luddites, I am stuck here. And I would appreciate it if you didn't interrupt me, considering that I'm not sure how much longer the librarian is going to let me stay here and I would really prefer to not have to come back."

"What, because going to the county library or taking the books home is sacrilegious?" Charlotte furrowed her brows a little, pulling out a chair and settling herself in it. She wasn't just going to leave.

"It's a little bit of a reach for you to try and get the entire set of research done in one afternoon, Rach."

"I'd rather not have to deal with taking these books in my name if I don't have to," Rachel said, continuing to write. "And I will get all of my research done this afternoon. I don't have that much more to go and I would get it done even faster if people didn't keep bothering me."

"Have you considered that maybe people just want to talk to you? I know the ice queen act keeps the majority of them away, but some people are obviously foolhardy enough to keep trying." She reached out, tugging one of the unused books towards her.

"Don't act like... what is this, a children's book gone wrong?" Charlotte made a face. "Ring Around The Rosy: Death and Disease in the Middle Ages? What the hell?"

"They may want to talk to me, but that doesn't mean I want to talk to them." It was the honest truth; no matter how much attention Rachel may have craved, dealing with most of the McKinley common masses was usually a higher price than she was willing to pay in order to get it.

She snatched the book back and put it neatly back into its stack. "It's about the Black Plague, obviously. Our culture has nursery rhymes about a mass pandemic." She thought about that for a moment. "Maybe I can fit that into my paper."

"Look at who you're talking to. I make a sport out of ignoring the idiots that wander these halls. I'm not saying you should coddle these talentless hacks, but there's a line." She shrugged.

"And I'm not even going to comment about how ridiculously creepy that is."

"I'll talk to anyone I think is worth talking to," Rachel said shortly. "No more, no less. I don't need to associate with people who aren't worth associating with. It's a waste of time and effort."

"I'm honored. How exactly are you deciding who's worth your time?"

"Anybody who makes a good impression within the first five minutes and has not done anything else to earn my ire." Rachel narrowed her eyes. "And unless you wish to be moved out of that group, I'd suggest that you leave me alone until I get my research done." She looked at the door pointedly.

"So something like this is completely off-limits then," Charlotte lilted, reaching out to ruffle Rachel's hair a bit before chuckling and giving her a side-hug as she stood up from the table.

"I'll let you finish. Mom canceled dinner this week, just to let you know. Some crisis at the bank."

Rachel cringed and immediately reached up to flatten her hair and fix her barrettes. "Don't do that," she snapped instinctively.

She frowned when Charlotte mentioned her mother. "Well, I hope everything's okay." She pulled her books towards her once again.

"Sorry!" But it was evident from the smile on her face and the sing-song tone of her voice that she really wasn't. It was too much fun to toy with her like that.

"I'm sure it's fine. Dad's probably got some new secretary he's fooling around with. Nothing new."
