BACKYARD iwannabedirty December 31 2010, 20:15:16 UTC
The backyard is fenced in, and there's a bonfire going, if any of you are brave enough to venture out into the cold. There's also a swing set across the yard, for her younger sister. DON'T BREAK IT.

Tina sat glumly on the swing set. It was a bit small for her, but she was only using it as a place to sit; she was in no mood for swinging. She wasn't even sure she wanted to be at the party anymore. Her head felt numb, swimming all sorts of differing emotions. She felt like crying, but tears refused to come to her eyes. She stared down at her arms, lost in thought. Beneath one dark armglove, she felt the threads of her friendship bracelet on her wrist. Now she wondered if she should get rid of it - the bracelet tied her to Artie, and her thoughts about him were more than friendship, but that was pointless now.

Artie's voice caused her to raise her head, but she looked down at her lap again immediately. She kicked at the ground beneath the swing a little, scuffing her boots. She tried to act nonchalant. "Why not?" she asked with a shrug. "Every other guy in school wants her, why should you be any different? Not that I blame you, I mean, why settle for bronze when you can get the gold, right?"

Artie wheeled up to her as best he could over the grass - always difficult in a wheelchair. Tina's whole demeanour was downcast, she looked lost. He hated it, and all he wanted to do was pull her in his arms and hold onto her till she felt better.

Time to man up, Abrams.

"I don't want Santana," he said softly, looking at her. "Well, yeah, she's hot, but who wants what everyone else has had?" He folded his hands in his lap, trying to build up the courage within himself to say what he needed to next. He could feel his heart beating faster, and his palms growing sweaty. "Besides, I like someone else a lot more."

Tina slowly raised her head, looking at him. "You...don't?" She asked. "But she's like, the Latin American Dream..." She desperately wanted to grab onto the idea that maybe she had a chance, but she was still too afraid.

His next few words, however, grabbed her attention completely. "You..you do?" Even though there was a slight chill outside, Tina felt too warm. Her heart beat faster and her stomach started churning. "D-does she know?" God she hoped it was a she. If Artie was about to come out of the closet she might faint. Then again, if he said what she secretly hoped he would (as ridiculous as a hope it was), she wasn't sure how she would take that either.

"C'mon, seriously? No, I don't want her. Besides, why should she actually want me? I'm a geek. I barely register on her radar," Artie said sincerely.

He swallowed, but his confidence grew slightly. He nodded slowly at Tina. "I do. She's funny, smart, a complete individual. But I think I blew my chance with her a while back when I rolled away from her when she needed a friend, so I tried to pretend that a moment we had didn't matter. But it did, a lot, and I can't stop thinking about it. But it's her choice now. If she wants to try again, she just has to let me know."

"Then that's her loss," Tina replied without a second thought.

If Tina had been able to separate her thoughts into semi-coherent statements, it would've been something like: "Ohmygodohmygodohmygod! Is he saying what I think he's saying? Ohmygod he is and I'm not dreaming!"

She exhaled a small laugh of relief, almost as if she'd been holding her breath. Now she had to reply. What to say? She'd imagined once or twice okay A LOT what she might say to him if this ever happened again. But now that it was here, all her fantasized words escaped her.

She looked down at her hands for a moment, then looked back up at him. "Artie...Do you remember when I told you my New Year's resolution about wanting to be braver?"

She gingerly put one hand on each side of his wheelchair, pulling him closer to where she sat. Tina looked in his eyes easily since they were almost at the same height here. "...I think I wanna get an early start." She leaned forward, her hands moving to his collar and pulling him into a kiss.

Artie watched her closely as what he said sunk in. His heart sank when she looked down at her hands (and was that a laugh?). He'd put everything he had into what he had said, and she'd moved on from him.

However, when she pulled him closer he couldn't help smiling at her. She did still feel the same way. "Sounds like a plan," he murmured, before leaning into her kiss. If anything, this kiss was better than the first one, because of everything that they'd been through. This time, he was more confident in his actions, and decided he could get very used to this.

Though this kiss was different from their last one, it was by no means any less enjoyable. In fact, it was more exciting now that she didn't have to worry about what he thought of her. Not to mention the way he kissed her back showed a change in his confidence level - and she liked it.

Tina didn't know how long they sat there kissing, neither one of them seemed to want the moment to end. But a raucous yell in the yard grabbed her attention and she broke away to look. Just a group of jocks gathered around the bonfire, throwing stuff into it to make the flames leap higher. None of them were even looking in the direction of Artie and Tina.

Still, it made her feel a little self-conscious. They were pretty exposed out here. "Um...do..do you want to get out of here?" She asked, her hands still resting on Artie's neck. "There's...not a whole lot of privacy around here.."

Artie had been enjoying the kiss, having lost track of time when he jumped when the jocks yelled. He glanced over at them, then back at Tina, flushing slightly, but giving her a shy smile as he licked his lips.

"Where do you want to go?" Artie asked her. "I don't mind leaving the party, but it's a pretty cold night outside." He realized then that neither he nor Tina were wearing coats, they'd been so caught up in kissing.

"Umm...." Tina paused, rubbing her arms and trying not to focus on how much she wanted to kiss him again. Or how cold it suddenly seemed. "If...if we actually get our jackets, we could...probably go to my house. M-my parents went out and I doubt they'll be back soon..." She blushed, realizing how forward it sounded.

Artie looked at her for a moment. It was forward of her, but if it meant he got to kiss her some more, he wasn't complaining. "My parents will be in all evening, and they have guests round. They were glad to get rid of me," Artie admitted. "Um... I guess so? Sounds good."

"O-Okay," Tina replied, a shy smile on her face as she slowly stood up from the swing. "I'll still walk you home after midnight," she added as they headed back inside to collect their coats.

Artie followed her into the house, letting her grab the coats as it was easier for him to hang back, avoiding the crowds. It seemed busier than it had before, and even if he and Tina hadn't just come to an understanding, he'd be glad to leave.

He waited until they had put on their coats and left before looking up at her. "Does this mean I get to call you my girlfriend?" he said, grinning suddenly.

With the growing crowd in Santana's house, Tina was glad they were leaving. She narrowly avoided getting caught in a drunken dispute between two guys, and it made her hurry back to Artie faster.

Now bundled up and beginning to thaw as they made their way down the sidewalk, Tina looked at him. The question surprised her, but his beaming smile was infectious. "I'd like that," she said softly, the corners of her lips curving upwards. "As...as long as I get to call you my boyfriend," she added.

She was quiet for a moment, her own question formulating in her head. "S-so, um....does this mean we're like...on a date?"

Artie nodded enthusiastically. "I'd like that too," he said as they walked (and rolled) side by side. He laughed slightly. "Even though it seems weird to think of it - in a good way."

He glanced up at her, biting on his bottom lip. "I... I guess so?" he said, shrugging slightly. "I've never actually been on a date before," he admitted. It was something to think about. He did want to take Tina out, maybe to the cinema...

Her heart beat faster in her chest. She had a boyfriend. She had a boyfriend. She had to repeat the idea in her head a few times before she got used to it. "A very good way," she agreed shyly.

"Me either," Tina replied. "I m-mean, this doesn't have to be a date if you don't want it to, I was j-just thinking...I mean...boyfriend, girlfriend, spending time together without anyone else around...it sounds date-y." She shrugged nervously.

"I g-guess we could just think of it as hanging out...um, with certain perks," she blushed, looking down at her feet as she walked.
