Chicago

Connor stepped onto the stage and headed towards center, looking at the group of students assembled in the house. The man smirked to himself before pointing at a set of scripts on the edge of the stage, his eyes sweeping the crowd. He noticed a blonde sitting just center and his smirk grew wider.

“Miss, if you please” he asked her, moving towards ( Read more... )

Mercedes raised a brow at the theater teacher, Conner she believed he'd said mid-rant, he seemed like a person who knew his stuff and often patted himself on the back for it. Whatever. The girl wouldn't let his slightly odd, showboat-ish attitude trip her up. Not when it was finally her time to shine. The posters announcing the auditions had literally stopped her in her tracks and made her ten minutes late to class. She normally wouldn't bat a lash at the theater group here at McKinley but this year that was quickly changing. Chicago was always a game changer. A show of amazing songs, dances, decietful storytelling and memorable characters. This prompted her to actually give a damn about this play, explaining her presence here at auditions and why she sat though Conner's moment of student degrading. Mercedes Jones was here to clench herself the role of Mama Morton and she wasn't leavin' until she got it.

The short, stocky brunette took a breath before moving herself to the preset place to preform her song; looking down at Conner at his station surrounded by various papers. He eyed her for a long moment before gesturing her a signal to start.

Practicing various songs in her room had left the place littered with dozens of pages of lyrics. From modern music to classic r&b to showtunes from various eras. Mercedes had wracked her mind for the perfect song. One that fit her voice to a key and also put forth a message to any and all listening. A nonchalant look at her dvd case had given her exactly what she needed just last night before bed. With a self confident smirk, Mercedes gave a nod to a pianist off to the side and he quickly began her song with it's tell tale beginning notes. She opened her mouth and naturally let the words roll off her tongue with an attitude all her own, belting Maureen's first lines of Take Me Or Leave Me into the vast auditorium. Letting herself really get into the song, Mercedes didn't even realize her small audition was coming to a close until her final words flew from her mouth. "Don't fight, don't lose your head, Cause every night, Who's in your bed!?" The brunette held her last note for a long moment before letting it fade into the silence of the place.

Taking another long intake of air, Mercedes snapped her fingers with a slight nod then bowed a bit. "Thanks for your time." This was why she loved that song. No matter what, take what she had or not, you could not deny she had talent and it was up to you to accept it or be a hater. A proud smile rested on her lips as she waited for any critique.

For the first time during the audition process, Connor looked up at who was singing. She was perfect and had the chops. Only one other person had wanted to be Mama Morton and well, pitchy was the nicest word for their performance. Connor looked down at the audition sheet, searching for a name, noting that she was not Charlotte or Rachel who were in an atrium doing vocal excersises or St. James who had gone on before. Mercedes Jones. The name sounded familiar, granted, Jones was a common last name and the last name of his dentist..maybe they were related, Connor didn't care as he looked up at the girl once more.

"Well, Mercedes," he began "You blew me away." he smiled, a genuine one, not the ones that directors use to ease their auditioners nerves. "There's not much I can say to that"

Her proud smile melted into one of pure pleasure. Of course she knew she was great but hearing it said always did make her heart swell. Mercedes wished Kurt was here so they could do their signature hand shake. It was a bit of a downer when the boy hadn't been completely interested in trying out for the show but his support of her auditioning backed her confidence level. Pushing aside her moment of sadness at his absence, the african american teen snapped her fingers in a seven formation with a chuckle before running her hand through her hair. This Jones was goin' places.

"Thank you Conner," She nodded back to the future director. "Never really made someone lack words, it's sort of nice." Mercedes' hands rested on her hips. "Any idea when the cast list will be up? I'd rather not work myself up into a worry for an unknown amount of time."

Connor chuckled at this, circling the role Mercedes had tried out for and putting a star next to her name. The girl had more than enough attitude to go with the show, let alone Mama Morton, she was his only definite cast member for the time being. He placed Mercedes' paper on the top of what would be a brand new stack and looked back up at the girl.

"You're quite welcome" he smiled again, showing more of his teeth than he did before. "A little bit after the auditions are over. Don't worry"

Mercedes grinned brightly back towards the man. "Perfect. I'll just chill out and hang around during the rest of the auditions. Thanks a lot, Conner." The teen gave a small wave and proudly strode off down stage, making her way off the performance space and into the audience seating where she comfortably perched herself into a seat in the fifth row.

All in all, the youngest Jones considered this to be quite the good day. Waiting wasn't always one of her strong suits but with the news she was expecting, Mercedes would wait calmly.
