ahhh here the great clashes......I live in a rural area, though not too far from the city and drive I must!
I feel local produce....is often hard to find in a supermarket, better at a farmers market, but If I can buy local and organic, perhaps even biodynamic...than I would rather do this
..as you know prices are usually higher, but we are not just supporting a biologic fuel system, we are supporting a way of life...the nutrients that one derives from local produce is much more beneficial to the system than that of something very foreign to the area....though i don't know much on it, it seems quite logical that these nutrient specific plants give our bodies what is truly required in the regions that we dwell....I am a student and just moved back from a sustainable community further south, but I do not live in a way where I can afford to grow my own food and make my own clothing so I must buy when neccessary....I just visited the most fantastic primitive skills gathering, and really it taught me new ways to use things I might usually throw away.....for this I am thankful, and slowly but surely I strive for personal efficiency and resourcefullness.....How would you answer your own question?
Whilst things are like they are right now, most certainly I would prefer buying local and buying better produce, its mainly a question of money and willpower for myself. One major benefit I find of eating local produce is that it is often of much higher quality than anything you can get elsewhere.
The price does vary sometimes, my family have found some remarkably cheap stuff, considering the quality, and some places selling pretty naff stuff for a higher price. I know my folks (who are much more motivated than myself) get a lot of joy out of finding good deals.
Altogether, it seems a much better way of carrying on, even disregarding the wider impact such actions take.
