( John pretends he doesn't notice how Rodney sidles away as he reaches out to place a hand on his shoulder. He forgets that touching doesn't always work these days. )

NO! The rule is that if you break our hearts, you have to put them back together. Mine could currently use a band-aid or twenty. The pager thing just makes me ache.

Like the previous commenter, I'm also curious as to what happened. Maybe just an itty, bitty companion piece?
