It hit Rodney with a force that nearly knocked him off his seat.  And wow, wasn’t that strange because, really, it was so unexpected.  Mostly because, to everyone, he seemed to be in love with Jennifer and she seemed to be in love with him.

So honestly, how in the world could Rodney possibly be in love with Sheppard?

No, he was mistaken.  There’s no way that Rodney McKay, Ph.D, Ph.D. could possibly have any sort of romantic interest in that flyboy Kirk named John Sheppard.  True, Sheppard had the whole nonchalance and surfer mentality thing down, and true, in some people, it might be deemed attractive.  But not true in that Rodney himself would possibly, could possibly, find that appealing in a man, any man, let alone the Colonel.

Still, it could be worth investigating this new perspective.

Wait?  What?

No, there is no new perspective.  No possible chance, and he really does mean no possible chance, that he could have any fleeting or long-term feelings of desire and love towards any man.  Rodney is quite heterosexual, thank-you very much, no matter how ludicrously good-looking or mathematically inclined John is.

Sheppard.  Sheppard!

Damn.

It’s not like there’s anything wrong with Jennifer (or Katie or Sam or Teresa).  She’s very smart, pretty and seems to be able to tolerate Rodney for longer than twenty seconds.  She’s considerate, too, always offering up ways for McKay to improve himself and hadn’t that been a goal of his since the “will you marry me fiasco with Katie” (which shall never be spoken of again)?  Didn’t he want to make himself a better man?  Be a little kinder, less hostile and adopt some humility?

Except that whenever Sheppard was around during Jennifer’s “improvement” moments, he always looked sorta funny at her, like maybe he thought she was a little nuts.  That maybe trying to change McKay was like trying to change the constellations in the sky.

Rodney had dedicated his life to the night sky with its endlessly fascinating secrets just waiting to be unlocked.

Just like John...Sheppard...John.

Huh.

A fundamental shift in his sexual orientation only warranted a “huh”.  No big histrionics or deep self-analysis.  No feeling of a supernova exploding in his brain.

Just a sense of clarity.  Like that last little exponent that made the whole equation work.

And that shocked the hell out of him.

Rodney watched now, Jennifer’s voice muted beside him, as John gave a final honking laugh that echoed through the mess hall then turned his eyes and smile towards Rodney.

Yes.  Clarity.

End
