An Ordinary Day
When it finally happens, it's not because of an adrenaline rush as they fall through the gate one step ahead of an angry mob, or because they've survived yet another near-death experience, or because aliens made them do it. It happens on a perfectly ordinary morning.
John and Rodney are on the East Pier, both leaning forward, arms folded on the railing. They are looking out over the ocean, talking idly of this and that, when Rodney leans over and kisses John.
It's a slow kiss, soft, their lips barely brushing. It doesn't look like a first kiss; it suggests intimacy and the easy familiarity of two people who know each other well enough to say everything without words.
There is a certain inevitability to it, a rightness. There's a lack of surprise, as if this had been where they were headed all along.
They smile at each other, then turn their attention back to the ocean. The sun is warm, the sky is blue, the breeze off the ocean tastes of salt.
Just an ordinary day.
