Chapter one /
Chapter two “Wake up.”
The world suddenly snaps into sharp focus and he can see the faces of T.J., Young and Eli pressed in close.
“Dr Rush can you hear me?” T.J.’s voice is strained like she’d been yelling. His eyes dart from one face to the next. They all look shaken.
“Hear?” Rush croaks, his own voice sounding worn-out. Relief shines in the medic’s eyes as she nods to the others to let him go.
He yanks an arm, trying to move. He’s strapped to the bed. Panic starts to rise again and it must show in his face because T.J. is leaning forward and gently un-strapping the wrist restraints. He wraps his arms around himself as soon as they’re free. Clenching and unclenching his fingers.
“Do you know where you are?” She asks kindly. She’s in her best caring doctor mode. The kindness of it brings out a surprisingly strong emotion in him.
“Destiny” Rush chokes out. Tears running down his face, sobs start to wreak havoc on his body “Destiny”
Relief, joy, home. Just as quickly his sobs turn to laughter.
“DESTINY!” He shouts at the roof. So many mixed emotions making his body hiccup.
He tries to calm down.
T.J. looks happy, Eli looks guilty and Young was somewhere in-between.
“That’s right Dr Rush. You’re back on the Destiny.” T.J. steps back and reaches for something behind Eli. She comes back to his side with a blood pressure cuff. His whole body jerks when she reaches for his arm. Young tenses next to him.
“May I take your blood pressure Nicholas?” T.J. asked softly holding her hand out patiently. Rush hesitates watching her suspiciously. She waits. He lifts his arm slowly holding it out to her.
“Do you remember what happened?” T.J. fixes the cuff around his arm. She frowns pulling it to its tightest setting.
“What happened?” Rush stares down at the cuff as she hand pumps the air into it.
“On the planet with the space ship.” She prompts. Young’s body tenses again and Rush sweeps his gaze across to him. Eli is moving from foot to foot eyes fixed on his feet. Rush looks up at Young confused.
“The rock-slide?” Rush says softly, unsure “I was running-”
He could see it happening. Young was in front of him, his back stiff. They had been fighting. Hadn’t they? Rush had tripped. And then there was -
Young was looking at him, guilt and disbelief playing across his features.
“Did I get it wrong?” Rush asked with a sinking feeling. Young’s face quickly changes to blank but there’s regret in his gaze.
“Its not- I’m just-” Young sighs heavily and runs a hand over his face “I shouldn’t have left you there. I’m truly sorry.”
There had been pain. Then black.
Then they had come.
“I didn’t like it there” Rush answered staring over Young’s shoulder as he tapped out a rhythm against his chest. A shadow danced across the wall.
“How long were you on the planet?” Young asked drawing Rush’s attention back.
“How long was I starving? Dying of thirst?!” Rush snapped at Young throwing his arm out to smack the Colonel across the chest. Young stepped back startled.
“How long before they-?” Rush’s brain shuts that thought down, his sentence cutting off with a guttural sound.
Silence reigned for a few moments.
“Did I trip?” Rush said looking back at Young “Is that why the rock-slide started?”
