Plunkett was no soft touch.
Running with a gun shot wound however was testing even his high tolerance for pain.
James and Rebecca were plowing on ahead glancing at each other and grinning sappily. Good on them for finding each other. Plunkett hoped it would last. They would do well in America together.
It was getting harder to breathe, the fire in his side making his gait lopsided. His pace was slowing and no matter how willing the spirit, his legs were having none of it.
His knees gave out and Plunkett crumpled to the ground, wheezing, a hand clamping over his injury. It was worse than he’d thought and Chance’s boot had only done more damage.
“Plunkett? What’s the matter?” James’ voice was scratchy and hoarse from the noose. He’d run back to crouch in front of Plunkett.
“Nuffin. I’ll be right in a sec” Will breathed looking up at his friend's worried face and forcing a smile. The bruising on Macleane’s neck was starting to darken.
Rebecca stood a ways behind him glancing over their shoulders.
“Well I don’t mean to hurry you -“
“Yeah yeah, go on. I’ll catch up” Plunkett glanced away from Macleane not comfortable with lying to the man’s face.
“I thought I was the liar of this pair.” Macleane snorted and Will turned back to face him.
“What?”
“Well actually I still am as you can’t lie for shit” James smiled and grabbed Plunkett under the arms “Come on then”
Will bit back a yell of pain and tried to get his feet under him. One halfway co-operated, the other didn’t even twitch. James obviously wasn’t prepared for Plunkett’s full weight and they both toppled to the ground. Pain exploded in his side.
“Mother-fucking cun-!” Will hissed through clenched teeth, burying his head into James shoulder.
“Will?” James sounded worried now his arms going around Plunkett and gently moving him to lie on his back. “Will what’s wrong?”
Plunkett forced his eyes open to look up at James. He looked unsure and Plunkett knew they didn’t have the time to try drag a wounded man to the port.
“Get out of here. Go to America and start over.” Plunkett sighed and relaxed back onto the ground closing his eyes. Macleane made a choking sound and grabbed Plunkett’s shoulders.
“Don’t you fucking DARE” James snarled shaking Will then pulling him to his chest. “You saved my life twice! You are the most noble and loyal person I have ever had the fortune to encounter and I am not leaving you here!”
It had been ages since anyone had hugged him and Plunkett was surprised at how this simple act could mean so much to him. He brought his arms around James and huffed out a breath laying his head on James’ shoulder.
“Fine you tosser. Get my bag for me.”
