from the Old World to the New World to the Newer World

Last thought from Italy, after nearly five weeks with friends, relatives, and 3 writers:

To Italians
I'm a shoulder to cry on
Or a sounding-board.

Can't make haikus about Noo Awlins (here also known as Nola) after only 3 days, but my tourist's jumbled impressions are as follows:
1. Great determination in rebuilding
2. It rains almost every afternoon
3. The swamps are amazing! Saw 3 alligators
4. Getting from hot, humid, rainy streets into dry rooms where air conditioning is at maximum strength is a sure-fire way of getting bad colds
5. The French Quarter is very attractive in the daytime and ultra-noisy and boozy at night.
6. Lovely to see some old friends and to talk on the phone with others.

Back home in three days' time, queues at security and passport control permitting - in Washington the queues were so bad that I missed a connecting flight scheduled more than two hours after my arrival time.
