Name Dilemma Resolved

Jun 30, 2009 11:09

Bill and I decided last night that, if it's a boy, he'll be TOBY.  It's the only name that really "spoke" to both of us from the moment we saw it on a baby name list.  We're not making it short for Tobias or Tobin, neither of which we are crazy about.  Maybe I'm influenced by Toby Keith, but I think of a strong, friendly man when I think of the ( Read more... )

Other Tobys I know of (fictional, but still):

The baby in Labyrinth, who is so annoying his sister wishes that the goblins come and take him away. He then gets tossed around by said goblins and David Bowie dressed in way too tight pants. She does of course rescue him but essentially he's the damsel in distress here while she's the hero.

The HR person on The Office who is essentially the sad sack character. He is divorced and rarely gets to see his daughter, all the employees ignore him when he tries to enforce the HR policies, and Steve Carell's character hates him and verbally abuses him constantly.

Those two are basically the first ones I think of when I hear the name so it kind of makes sense why I'm against it, I think. :)

I don't watch the Office, so I was unaware of that one. I forgot the baby in Labyrinth was Toby. I loved that movie. LOL

Would you hate us if your nephew was named Toby anyway?

I wouldn't hate you, but I may feel compelled to call him by his middle name or some little silly nickname instead. :)

Fair enough. :)

Bill nixed Liam as sounding too foreign. Cooper got nixed also. Payton is still eligible as a second-runner. We nixed Sawyer because it was too much "ER" sound with Atwater. Drew is still a possible second-runner also, but not Andrew. Go fig. LOL

I agree with Bill on Liam. It's a very English name, and I get the feeling a lot of ignorant Americans wouldn't know how to pronounce it, simple as it is. Cooper I don't like, and of course Sawyer makes me think of Lost. :) Drew isn't bad.

I guess you have to take into account that I have a name difficult to pronounce and spell, and I know how difficult that can be, so I think babies should be given nice, normal (though not too overused) names. I have some friends who named their daughter Grayson. I mean, the word "son" is in the name, how could you do that to a girl??

Watching Labyrinth would probably be a good test to see just how much you like the name. She calls out his name quite often. :)

Yeah, I have to agree on Grayson.

Oh, and not sure if it'll actually get used or not with anything we come up with, but Bill only likes Quinn as a middle name. Benjamin got nixed also b/c of some bad association somewhere along the line for Bill. (Of course, I have some perfectly good names that are on my nix-list for the same reason) LOL And Harrison we just decided against--it was my great-uncle we had in mind and not Indy.

That's funny, I totally forgot about Harrison Ford. The first person I actually thought of was George Harrison, but that's probably because I've had Beatles on the brain lately.

And yeah, I liked Benjamin (its one of the ones I voted for) but I can understand the whole association thing. Heck, I'm resistant to buy a car because the only person I know who owns one is someone I can't stand.. =D

Didn't I suggest Drew?

Hey look, I'm useful for something beyond making noise and entertaining alcoholics!

Did you? I know you said it was "okay"...didn't realize that was high praise. LOL It is still a backup name.
