Speaking from a personal stand point. My father is an avid fox news watcher, as in when/if he gets home before 8pm he will tune in to bill o'reilly, etc.. These shows help him identify with the culture he grew up in.
My father lived next to a housing project in queens, new york and watched people cash in their welfare checks for unproductive products every month as he was forced to drop out of high school upon his fathers death only to find work in construction. After hundreds of 18+ hour days he is now 50 years old and still accepting any overtime he can find to keep him self from being one of those people living off the thousands who work like him. This attitude has created a serious distrust for the poor and "underprivileged".
There is no one civilization of people that grew up like my father, as there is no one group of people that grew up like your self, who find the political commentary of John Daily and Steven Colbert pertinent to the current political atmosphere.
Be conscious that not everyone has had the same upbringing as yourself and there fore are subject to different political ideals. After all, the men that my father saw cashing their welfare check for alcohol could have had a son murdered and suffered from serious depression or lost their job to someone who was privileged enough to grow up in a town where a legitimate high school lead him/her to a college education.
A persons point of view is shaped by individual occurrences small or large. Those small occurrences will help attract a person to certain commentary so one can defend ones-self in his/her point of view in much the same way you are attracted to the daily show or colbert report. Those shows help show that everyone is human and you yourself are able to outsmart the figure heads of american society.(this is a broad description)
