Authors Note: I definitely want to expand on this if I ever get around to finishing shit.
“Is that why you saved me?” she asked, looking out over the stars twinkling above the Azerith Plains. It’s been a month since Richard ascended the throne of D’Hara, driving Rahl from his delusion that he might one day recover his title. Nicci had Richard to thank for her life. Even as his Mord’Sith approached her with their agiel in hand, ready to pave the threat to their Lord Rahl, he had stepped in between them.
Of course, she should have known it wasn’t without cause. That’s how things worked in this world. Only the useful ones survived.
But, to her surprise, Richard’s gaze remains steady. He isn’t looking at the view, he’s focused and intent on her. His scrutiny shouldn’t mean anything, but Nicci found herself basking in the fact that someone as beautiful as Richard is willing to give her more than a passing thought.
“No.” he said, his tone both firm and soft. It drew her attention.
“What?”
“I didn’t spare your life because I wanted my Han, Nicci. I did it because you don’t deserve to die. You haven’t begun to live.”
And how ironic, she had already lived close to three of his lifetimes.
Despite everything, the emotion rose hot in the back of her throat. Her eyes began to sting with unshed tears as she nodded.
“You are something else, Richard Rahl.”
With a smile, Richard’s eyes finally moved from hers. Only then did she find that she could breathe.
“I wouldn’t know. Now, about my Han.”
