Kahlan wasn’t sure how to tell him, but now that he is here, she can hardly put it off for any longer. She realizes that she doesn’t wish to. Her Richard’s been gone for nearly four months, seeing to matters in D’Hara while she remained to settle the ones in Aydindril.
It happened unexpectedly, though Kahlan knew they should have suspected.
On the night before the dawn that Richard left, he had made love to her, finally, in her big, comfortable bed that felt more like heaven with Richard’s company. One night of restless passion had bestowed upon them a gift of life.
Deterred by the state for only a moment, Richard leaps from his mount to dash to his wife. She’s standing in front of the Confessor’s Palace, cradled by the building’s frame. But she is the only thing he sees. Without words, Kahlan reaches for his hand and settles it over her stomach. Her eyes glisten with tears.
“We’ve been waiting for you, my Richard,” the tears spill down her cheeks as she whispers, “Welcome home.”
