It wasn’t the sound of footsteps echoing from wall to wall down every corridor.
It wasn’t the sound of nobleman whispering nor politician’s plotting their next scheme to win popular vote.
It wasn’t the sound of women babbling, or the cooks dropping a plate or a spoon, nor was it the sound of the council as they followed her out of the grand chamber’s, trying to persuade her mind otherwise on a matter she was most against.
“Mother Confessor, please -I beg you to reconsider.” The man pleaded, and when Kahlan’s eyes turned to him, he did look as if he could fall to his knees then and there. But there was a stern set to each of their features.
And if there was one thing the Mother Confessor disliked, it was those who thought for a second they could decide the fate of another - those who took away free will. She had power enough for that, and wouldn’t tolerate it from those who could actually help it.
“Counselor Rothenburg, the meeting has adjourned. There will be no more discussion on this matter, have I made myself clear?” The demand unmistakable, she glared at each councilman in turn. “You are each guilty of influencing my life and my decisions, putting your foot down when you deemed something as unacceptable. Well, now it is my turn to put my foot down, and I declare your ruling unorthodox. Richard Cypher may be a Rahl, but he is a good man. A good man who has magic to counter my magic, and that there is just cause for my union with him. If you must look at it so black and whitely.”
The silence rung deafeningly, save the glorious sound which had caught her attention prior. It was a sound so beautiful that her sour mood disappeared in an instant.
Straightening, she gave them a tight lipped smile reserved for those she held little tolerance for.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me ,” and at the swift turn of her heel, she was off -leaving them to be dumbfounded and dejected.
“I fail to see how this amuses you, Lord Rahl.” Cara was saying as Kahlan rounded the corner, once more graced with a giant bellow of laughter. Boisterous and wonderful, Richard’s jolly mood echoed off the surrounding walls.
She had followed the sound to the inner courtyard, discovering her Seeker with his Mord’Sith. A group of otherwise terrifying women, wearing smiles and giggling; although Kahlan would hate to be within a league of anyone who accused them of such.
Leaning against the stone arch way, she watched silently as the interaction wore on. Something about Cara and chipmunk’s and how the little creatures apparently enjoyed her company. Eventually, Kahlan could not contain her own laughter, drawing all the attention to herself. Her eyes were drawn to Richard’s, and her smile only blossomed. Everything about him brought forth such a wonderful feeling. She could feel her stomach flopping, the butterflies flapping their wings merrily within. Her heart pounded at the sight of him, and she tingled down to the tips of her toes.
“Mother Confessor,” Cara began , shifting towards the woman with a hand to her hip. “Not you too.”
Richard grinned then, and spoke before Kahlan could. “Of course her too! Kahlan and I were cut from the same soul. Naturally, we think alike.” He shrugged, making his way towards said woman in white. Kahlan bit her cheek as he approached, shifting until her back were pressed fully to the stone wall behind her. Richard didn’t seem to mind it, he joined her just the same, leaning with a hand braced on the stone behind her. “Isn’t that right, Kahlan?”
Her named poured so deliciously from his lips, she could only catch her breath and fall victim to his natural charm.
“Sorry Cara,” she chuckled, reaching out to grab the tooth pendent which hung from her Seeker’s neck. Without glancing in Cara’s direction, she drew Richard down to her, arching into his form when his breath brushed across her cheek.
He chuckled deeply, and she melted in response.
