Chapter 1
,,AHHH!! Arizona, I’m going to kill you!’’
,,Why me? You wanted this!’’
,,I hate you! You could’ve warned me!’’
,,How was I supposed to know?! And by the way, you’re breaking my hand!’’
,,You can have some pain, too! And it’s still nothing against mine!’’
,,Ladies!’’ the doctor interrupts. ,,I need you to calm down. And I need you to push. Now!’’
We look into each others’ eyes. I see fear in hers.
,,He’s right, Calliope.’’ I say. ,,Let’s do this!’’
,,I’m scared!’’ she whispers. I kiss her head.
,,I’m here, I’m with you.’’ I sooth her. Calliope starts to push. Her screams fill the room and I wish I could take away her pain. She’s squeezing my hand far too tight, but I ignore the pain. My hand doesn’t matter. Calliope is the only thing that matters. She is giing birth to our first daughter! My hand can wait.
,,Okay, you’re doing great! I can see the head.’’ The doctor says.
,,Did you hear that, Calliope? It’s nearly over!’’ I tell Calliope softly. She manages a small smile and starts pushing again. Only a few moments later it’s over and I hear our baby crying. I cut the umbilical cord before going back to my wife’s side to kiss her lightly. We’re both exhusted but more than happy. The nurse hands Calliope our little girl. No words are spoken. We’re just smiling and crying and enjoying the moment.
,,Hey, little girl!’’ Calliope finally whispers. She’s watching the small child in her arms intently. Her eyes are glistening with tears. How could I ever consider not to see something like this? To have something like this? It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen! My wife holding our first child.
,,Arizona, look, she has your eyes!’’ Calliope says exitedly. I look down. She’s right. Piercing blue eyes are staring up to me. A small tear rolls down my cheek.
,,And she has your hair.’’ I add. ,,She’s perfect!’’ I whisper.
,,We need a name for her!’’ Calliope reminds me.
,,How about Sophia Marie Torres?’’ I suggest. ,,Sophia after your grandmother and Marie after my great grandmother.’’
,,That sounds awesome!’’ Calliope smiles. ,,Don’t you think so, Sophia?’’ Sophia smiles. Oh my god! Did I just see what I think I saw?! ,,Ari! Dimples!’’ Calliope squeals. I smile widely. Ok, so we definitely chose the right donor!
,,I love you!’’ I say and kiss my wife softly. ,,And you too, my little girl!’’ I kiss Sophia’s head. What a wonderful day! The best day of my life!
