so i saw mars volta on tuesday, and i'm gonna say i was disapointed. mars volta held up their end of the agreement, playing their new album in it's entirety, plus a few old songs that i love. unfortunately, i was expecting a different kind of show, with jumping and thrashing to 'this apparatus must be unearthed' and 'son et lumiere/inertiatic ESP' (neither of which they played). instead we got 2.5 full hours of really drawn out jamming songs, which is really the essence of that band anyway, but i was too stoopid to realize that. my suspicions were confirmed after song 3 (concertina) when cedric bixler yelled pretty much at me specifically for being too violent: "i don't know what generation you grew up in...but this isn't the warped tour...you know who you are." and i did know who i was. so i spent the remainder of the show being chill. the crowd was also a huge bummer, made up almost entirely of jazz kids, hippie kids and old guys. so, the show was a let down, only because i didn't really know who mars volta was until right then.
here are some shows that i've heard of that might be sick:
against me! - bomb shelter - may 19th
blood brothers - ICC - may 21st
lawrence arms - ICC - june 2
get up kids - PA - june 23rd
aquabats - axis - july 2
i don't know if i can go to all of these, but they all seem pretty decent.
PS - mars volta put on an amazing set, even if the show wasn't fun.
