The Vehicle Saga Begins
Now begins what will undoubtedly become known as the great vehicle saga.
In the past, in fact every year since 2003, we've made attempts to rent vehicles in Nairobi to use while we are in Kenya. Usually they were either too expensive or too challenging to acquire. Our research project does have a small pick-up that an NGO sold to the University many years ago and it's been slowly dying ever since. And, that leaves about a dozen people fighting to use one vehicle.
Inonda spends most of his days trying to keep it barely running.
I've just been informed that renting a vehicle may be a real possibility this year, which is all good I suppose ... except that I know simply renting a vehicle in Kenya is never quite that simple. I am still having painful memories of days spent in Nairobi stranded and fuming over rental issues, missing windows and bad tires. Not to mention the money ....
It will be interesting to see how this develops between now and the time I arrive back in Kenya. I have so little faith ...
I do still have the option of borrowing my friend's car, as he will be in the US for several months, but then I was warned that this option might not be worth my while unless I have excellent auto mechanic skills. Hmmmmm ....
