Border in the middle of the country...

Fascinating, this project of NASA.

Tell me what you think explains the north/south border that runs somewhere in central Texas (I'm guessing the location) north to Minnesota. To the east, more lights, brighter lights. To the west, there's a north/south band that has fewer, yet further to the west from there are far fewer, far dimmer lights (with some exceptions).

My point: How would you explain that sense of border that transcends various states, seems to be unrelated to any specific state political borders?

Perhaps I'm noticing the obvious, but seeing it in this way is striking to me.

I guess I'm grasping for some explanation, as I can see the pattern and recognize Interstate 15 as it travels north from Las Vegas, through southern Utah, to SLC.

But this border I'm trying to point out has no interstate, no particular set of state borders, and no clear explanation of the difference on each side of this 'border'.
