AR80 update

Jan 22, 2009 09:31

I've been slowly fiddling with my AR80.  Last night I put the key and flywheel on, a battery, and checked for spark.  It had spark!
Excited I was going to throw the carb on, and see what it would do, but it's been so cold that I had to warm up the plastic intake so I wouldn't ruin it.  I had to take off all of the stock air box to get the carb on, and that gave everything time to warm up.
I rigged a gas tank, filled it with pre-mix and promptly spilled gas out the overflow vent on the carb.  Good sign that it's full.
I tightened it all down and started cranking the kickstart by hand.
then turned it on
kept cranking
I got pissed and sprayed ether in the spark plug hole
kept cranking
turned it on again
cranked more
more ether
cran-KAPOW!
It's loud without a muffler, or pipe.
I started it two more times without ether.

I still need to do a lot of assembly, straightening and cleaning, but it started.
After 8 years of having the bike taking it down to the frame and putting it back together, moving across country, it finally fires.  Probably been 10 years sense the last time it fired up.  The New Mexico tags expired in 98.
