the virgin suicides

i apologize for reading into a book i'm reading for pleasure, but... in the virgin suicides, that part where the narrator describes the Isle of something with the dying plants... does anyone think that those plants are there as a metaphor for the Lisbon girls? there's some line where the caretaker lady is complaining about how the plants can't grow because of a lack of sunlight or something. damn this book is so good.
