Hi, Hello, Hey. First of all--thank you. You offered to write one of my fandoms, so you're obviously a perfect paragon of humanity and all that jazz. I'll open this with generals likes and dislikes, I'm sure you know the drill, and then put fandom-specific stuff under a cut. If you already have an idea about how you want to write about the fandom we matched on--wow, I'm jealous! tell me your secrets!--just skip over the fandom stuff and go forth with your bad self.
Things I like include, but are in no way limited to: fun with POV, fun with linear vs. non-linear storytelling, fun with tone, fun with writing. I really dig character studies, stories that really get into what makes a character tick (and something porny that can get at that is wonderful too), and I like relationships that are hard and prickly and worth fighting for. I like happy endings that don't feel tacked on or forced. I like doubt, and hope, and theology; I like actors, and directors, and I like the random deity. I like fairy tales. I like interesting turns of phrase, I like the perfect line, I like any story written just for me. If you have any questions about my taste (or lack thereof), feel free to ask
tangleofthorns, who probably knows my fannish tastes better than I do. (My fannish tumblr is
ylizam, but it's mostly just me reblogging things I think are pretty.)
Things that I would prefer you not include--especially gratuitously; there are obviously ways to engage with problematic actions/thoughts/etc. in fiction, but there is a very fine line there--are as follows: noncon, necrophilia, pedophilia, incest, non-character driven racism/sexism/[all]isms. I also have a pretty big embarrassment squick (I mean, I watched some of The Office, but not comfortably--and often a single episode took more than one sitting for me to work through). A/B/O doesn't do anything for me. And I'm not really interested in AUs for any of these fandoms: canon divergence is fine, but not-related-to-canon alternate universes really aren't my bag.
That's basically it. I like character names to be spelled correctly. Also other words. But, again, not deal breakers per se, and typos happen and slip through the cracks and we're all just fine on the other side.
And now onto the more specific requests. Remember: these are in no way required, and I include them mostly to give you an idea of where I am, what I've been thinking about, in relation to the source material. Do not be afraid of the gen--some of my requests involve couples, and while I personally ship them that does not in any way mean that I'll be unhappy with fic that involves the characters in question interacting in a non-romantic manner.
Everybody Hates Chris
Rochelle
First of all, I love this show. This show makes me all kinds of happy. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it--it's on
Hulu in its (slightly abridged) entirety for Hulu subscribers, and it's on DVD and you can buy it streaming for Amazon and I've seen the odd episode or two floating around on Youtube--if you enjoy smart comedy about family and being a smart kid that's upfront about class and race issues. It just makes me smile. It's so good!
I requested Rochelle because she's my absolute favorite. I'd love something about her and Julius--he has two jobs--whether it's during their courtship or post-show lives or a slice of life moment from during the show that maybe we don't see. Or something about her and Tonya, maybe after Tonya's all grown up, or maybe when she's not. Or just Rochelle being herself, quitting another job, starting another. In short: the show is largely Chris's POV, and I'd love a deeper exploration of what makes Rochelle tick.
Saving Face
Hwei-Lan Gao, Xiao Yu
I absolutely adore this movie. I rewatch it regularly, and I love all the main characters and would read a million stories about all of them. However, what I really want now is the story of Hwei-Lan Gao and Xiao Yu. Or one of their stories. How did they first hook up? How do they navigate life after the baby's born? Tell me about one date out of a million (or one date out of one because they decide dates aren't for them). Give me morning kisses or running errands or a random day in the life. You don't have to go super romantic or shippy with this if that's not your thing, but I'd really rather you don't break them up--just give me gen fic about co-parenting or basic day to day life involving the both of them and I'll be happy.
Spy
Susan Cooper, Rayna Boyanov
Okay, so I super ship it. I do. But I'd love fic about the two of them interacting in any way, whether sexual, romantic, or in the same vein as the movie. A missing scene from the movie, something after the fact where Rayna breaks out and Susan has to go after her, something post-movie where Rayna is conditionally freed for some sort of caper with Susan, something where they pretend to be married or dating to save the world--anything goes, really. If you feel like you can write in the tone of the movie, awesome, but feel free to go with something else if that's more your style. Give me Susan and Rayna and you really can't go wrong. I love the other characters in the movie too, so feel free to include them as you see fit. (That said, if you don't ship Susan/Rayna, please please please do not focus on another pairing. Gen would definitely be preferable!)
Magic Mike XXL
Paris, Rome
Oh gosh. I just want all the stories about the two of them--how they got together, what exactly their relationship is, all of it, any of it. I can't even think of prompts; I'm just really interested in both of them and how they define themselves both individually and together. Want to tell me a story about how they have a monthly business phone call in addition to regular hook ups and friendship? Awesome! About how they're together in a long-term open relationship with all the ups and downs long-term entails? Brilliant! What about that time they got super competitive about something super minor and inconsequential in the grand scheme of things because they had a bet on it? Great! (Also, I didn't request him because I want the story to be about Rome and Paris, but Rome/Mike as a secondary pairing--not the focus of the story!--would rock too. If you're into that sort of thing.) In conclusion, just tell me all about Paris and Rome.
UnREAL
Rachel Goldberg, Quinn King
I love how wonderful they both are at their jobs and just how terrible they both are. I love how fucked up they both are. I ship it, but I definitely recognize that any relationship between the two of them would be an emotional (if not physical) trainwreck. Whether you write about them one-upping each other at work or manipulating each other after hours or one-upping each other after hours or manipulating each other at work, well, you can't go wrong. This is one fandom where I'd take the unhappily ever after and love it, though if you can make a happily ever actually work for these women more power to you.
Tennis RPF
Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki
So
this article came out and I read it and now I am asking for it for Yuletide. Tell me stories about their competitiveness, about tennis. Tell me stories about sleepovers and pancakes and lazy make outs, tell me stories about friendship and stress and life and negotiating two very demanding lives. I'm not big into super melodramatic melodrama (and I'm not coming to Yuletide for serious explorations of homophobia)--though something about family and the awkwardness of new relationships, especially public ones, and compromising and being soppy and grinning and laughter and arguments and just living life would be grand.
See? Nothing scary to see here, I swear! I hope, at any rate.
I mostly just want to thank you in advance. Thank you! For knowing at least one of the fandoms I've requested, for volunteering to write in it, and for being as kick-ass as I know you must be!
