Hey, awesome writer person! Yeah, that's right, I'm talking to YOU.
You offered to write in one of my fandoms, and for that you rock like a rocking thing holding a rock and then kicking a rock across the parking lot. Who then rocks out some more to the best music ever made. That's right, Jon Bon Fuckin' Jovi.*
Okay, now that that's out of the way, time to get to the nitty-gritty, as the cool kids call it. (Lies. The cool kids never say "nitty-gritty.") Things I like include, but are in no way limited to: fun with POV, fun with linear vs. non-linear storytelling, fun with tone, fun with writing. I really dig character studies, stories that really get into what makes a character tick, and I like relationships that can't work out as much as I like my happy endings. I like doubt, and hope, and theology; I like actors, and directors, and I like the random deity. I like fairy tales. I like interesting turns of phrase, I like the perfect line, I like any story written just for me. If you have any questions about my taste (or lack thereof), feel free to ask
tangleofthorns, who probably knows my fannish tastes better than I do.
Things that I would prefer you not include--especially gratuitously; there are obviously ways to engage with problematic actions/thoughts/etc. in fiction, but there is a very fine line there--are as follows: noncon, necrophilia, pedophilia, incest, non-character driven racism/sexism/[all]isms. I also have a pretty big embarrassment squick (I mean, I've watched The Office, but not comfortably--and often an episode can take more than one sitting for me to work through).
That's basically it. I'm not huge on porn-sans-plot-and/or-character development, but I'll read it. I like character names to be spelled correctly. Also other words. But, again, not deal breakers per se.
My request details are in no way required, and I included them mostly to give you an idea of where I am, what I've been thinking about, in relation to the source material. Do not be afraid of the gen. Or the slash. Or the het. I'm good with all three, and I'm way more interested in character development and good writing than, say, Characters X & Y getting it on.
Everybody Hates Chris
Rochelle
First of all, I love this show. This show makes me all kinds of happy. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it--unfortunately, it does not appear to be streaming for free anywhere (
legally, at any rate), but it is out on DVD and stuff--if you enjoy smart comedy about family and being a smart kid that's upfront about class and race issues. It just makes me, at least, smile all the time. So good! Anyway, I requested Rochelle because she's my absolute favorite. I'd love something about her and Julius--he has two jobs--whether it's their courtship or post-show lives or a slice of life moment from during the show that maybe we don't see. Or something about her and Tonya, maybe after Tonya's all grown up, or maybe when she's not. Or just Rochelle being herself, quitting another job, starting another.
Women's Hockey RPF
Amanda Kessel
Amanda Kessel is the best of Kessels, and an awesome women's hockey player in her own right. I just want all of the fic about her: about her relationship with her brother and/or other family members, her friendships at school or on the USWNT, something romantic with Hilary Knight, something bro-y with Julie Chu, prank wars, whatever floats your boat. Just, please, do not write me a non-hockey AU. An AU where she plays hockey AND is a costumed superhero on the side? GOLDEN. An AU where she does not play hockey but is a costumed superhero? Not so much. Part of what I absolutely adore about her is the fact that she's a "pro" athlete, you know? Anyway, a good women's hockey primer lives
here if you're at all interested in awesome things.
Saving Face
Hwei-Lan Gao, Xiao Yu
I love this movie, and I love the story it tells. However, it is very much Wil's story. What's Ma's story? Tell me about how she and Xiao Yu got together, or what happens after the movie, or even what happens during the movie while we're focused on Wil's adventures. I'd especially love a deeper look at their relationship, though I don't need anything super "shippy," per se; a day in the life would totally float my boat (just please don't break them up). I just really loved what we saw of Ma in the movie, and I want more.

The Cool
Go wild. This is my "no, really, play in this universe and have an awesome time and just HAVE FUN" request. Play in this sandbox! Tell me about the Cool, or anyone else in this world, or make up your own characters. Tell me about zombie hunters or zombie families or something I can't even imagine. I'd love a feminist version of this world if that is the sort of thing you are into. (Note: no whitewashing the universe, please.) If we didn't match on this, but you're curious,
the lyrics are here and you can listen to the song on Youtube.
Baseball RPF
José Fernández, Yasiel Puig
The Thrilling Adventures of
Fernández and
Puig! I'd love anything about these two--slash totally welcomed, but in no way required--whether it's playing against each other or maybe playing on an All-Star team together or dealing with the media or eating lunch or whatever. They're both Cuban refugees, and accused of being "brash" and "
not white" by the baseball establishment (though to different degrees, especially regarding their personal lives), and I'd love an exploration of what that's like, though I'd equally love something light-hearted and fun.
See? Nothing scary to see here, I swear! (Except for the part where I basically entirely cribbed entire the non-fandom-specific sections of this letter from last year's letter. And the Bon Jovi reference. Those parts were a little scary, right?)
I mostly just want to thank you in advance. Thank you! For knowing at least one of the fandoms I've requested, for volunteering to write in it, and for being as kick-ass as I know you must be!
*Disclaimer: not actually the best music ever made. Fun to rock out to, though. Whip out the Aqua Net, we're going Jersey style up in here.
