Sometimes you do Purim and sometimes Purim does you

It hasn't been very obvious but since we moved to this lovely community in the shade of New York (14 miles down the road to the George Washington Bridge if that fixes the place for anyone), I found a synagogue and signed Becca up for Hebrew school and started to get involved. I helped out, I cooked a few things, I may have made latkes with the ( Read more... )

So, you'd barely started to unpack and you were program chair? Yeah, I've done that... (or had it done to me, as the case may be...)

I like the postcards from Mordechai!

What really sucks is that by saying 'oh, I can't, I'm too busy', the group has burnt Sarah out on being the programming chair-- even though her fullness-of-ideas aspect is what makes/would make her a great programming chair. Now she says she's not going be chair of anything, just a committee member.

Me, I would have sent out a pleading begging email and buttonholed people like crazy-- but I know that even that doesn't always work. Witness Emmaus Fair. (Mother Teresa's complaint rephrased for event organizers. "I know my group wouldn't give me anything I can't handle. But sometimes I wish my group had less faith in me.")

On the other hand, this weekend I think the movers'n'shakers realized that Sarah's been doing this on her own and are Taking Steps. :)

What a cool idea! I have always liked the story of Esther. You brought it to life for the kids and they learned stuff without knowing that they were learning stuff. Long live Mordechai of Shushan! :)

I love Purim, it's a great fun holiday, and the tradition of doing humorous versions of Torah stories, rabbinical teachings, etc. on Purim is very strong. Our wonderful Rabbi used this in services to introduce the recitation of the Shema (one of the key prayers, taking a place somewhat like the Creed and somewhat like the Our Father):

Sounds cool! And also like you're very overworked. Breathe.

A few months ago, I heard an interview with a musician who'd made an album of songs about Jewish holidays, or something like. He explained that when he was young, he used to be confused by the various holidays, and the family joke had become "They tried to kill us, we survived, let's eat!" Needless to say, it had become a song. . .

You rock, Sarah. Can't decide if they deserve you or not, by the sound of it. :)
