Jason heard the words fall from Peter’s mouth- “Oh Mom, here’s Jason- say hello!” and suddenly, staring him in the face was Peter’s phone his mother on the other end. Jason heard the garbled crackle of someone speaking on the other end, and his heart began beating rapidly.
No. No, no, no no no no. He wasn’t going to talk to Peter’s  mother. He wasn’t. What was he supposed to say? He had nothing to say to her! What did Peter want him to say? His mind flickered back to their conversation early that day- he’d said something about telling his mother, hadn’t he? Jason began to panic. Peter hadn’t told, had he? He couldn’t have. Jason had made it very clear they would tell no one, although Peter continued to slip hints that he wanted to tell… shit. Jason inwardly cursed himself for not paying attention as Peter had talked. What if he had told? What if she… God. Jason’s heart beat even faster as he began to imagine the conversation. Would she shout at him? Would she demand to know what the hell was going on? Would she deliver that dreaded ultimatum- ‘I’m calling your parents’? What did Peter want him to say?’
No. No. He couldn’t do this. He just couldn’t. Jason tore his eyes away from the phone and looked into Peter’s face, quickly shaking his head. No. No. He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t speak to her.
Peter stared for a moment, then slowly retracted his hand, speaking into the phone. “No, never mind, we have to go…” The hurt in his eyes stabbed Jason’s chest. He was sorry, but he couldn’t do it.
Peter continued talking, then hung up. An awkward silence fell over the room. What was Jason supposed to say? ‘I’m sorry’? ‘How about we tell her?’ More like, “What was that?’, or ‘What the fuck were you thinking?’ But nothing was said. Peter just eyed Jason nervously, and the tension built. One second. Two seconds. Three, four, five…
“Hey mama’s boy, let’s go.” Ivy, her head stuck in the doorframe, cut through the silence. The tension immediately vanished Jason let out a small chuckle.
Things were going to be okay.
