'The Giver,' in print and on screen

I finally got a chance to read "The Giver," albeit while sitting in the emergency room overnight at the hospital (long story is too long to go into, but, short story, I'm fine now). Then less than 24 hours later, I just happened to catch the 2014 film version (well, most of it) on television. Stars are Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and - I kid you not - Taylor Swift, almost unrecognizable with dark wavy hair.

This is the most dystopian dystopia I have ever read about/watched, even more so than "The Handmaid's Tale," "The Hunger Games" or "Mad Max: Fury Road." It is very very heavy even though it has been marketed as a Young Adult property (that is to say, for kids in middle school). I don't think I could have truly grasped the depth of the evil at 12 or even at 20. It's worth reading/watching, but, if you truly understand it, it will shake you to your core.
