Ninth Hell Cabin; Alcove B1; Monday Evening

It had taken the better part of yesterday and today, but Bones had managed to sanitize his new living space. It really was unfair. He had hardly gotten a chance to settle in his dorm room and then he had to up and move somewhere else. And he hadn't even really settled in there. At least he had managed to get his hands on clothes that weren't his ( Read more... )

Spock was coming back from a trip outside when he spied one of his cabinmates and decided to make himself known. He was being social. His mother would be pleased. "Greetings," he said to the human. "I am Spock. I am currently dwelling in alcove B4, which, I believe, makes us neighbors after a fashion."

Bones immediately tensed up at the voice and it would just freaking figure he would be living with Spock. Jim would be hearing about this. Loudly.

"I believe it does," he said, trying to maintain civility even though he really just wanted to fall into the usual mood he reserved for Spock. "I'm Doctor Leonard McCoy."

The doctor part was completely unnecessary and he hadn't bothered using it with anyone else but this was Spock and he deserved the formality, dammit.

Spock chose not to comment on any hostility he might be picking up from this person he'd just met. Surely it wasn't because of anything he'd done. "Doctor?" Spock asked. "But you are at a high school."

"I realize that," Bones said irritably. "But that doesn't make the fact that I'm a doctor any less true."

"Studies that would lead to that title come after secondary education," Spock argued.

"Again, I realize that. I've been through secondary education before," he said. "Not that it's any of your business but due to a series of unfortunate circumstances I'm doing it over again."

Spock did not look convinced. For starters, from what Spock knew of the human aging process, this one was not yet out of his teens. "That is completely illogical."

Somehow Bones knew he was going to say that. "This is a strange place, Spock. You might have to learn to accept that some things are illogical and just deal with it."

"I do not accept that," Spock told him.

"Then you're in for a lot of headaches you--" Bones stopped abruptly from adding a "green blooded hobgoblin" to the end of that. Speaking of headaches, he was starting to get one from dealing with Spock already.

"Is that your opinion as a medical professional?" Spock's tone, while remaining perfectly level, somehow managed to suggest that he put about as much stock in McCoy's professional opinion as he did in the opinion of his left shoe.

Bones set his jaw and dug his hand into his bedspread. "Unnecessary stress might cause headaches, yes. I personally don't give a damn what kind of pain your completely idiotic way of thinking causes you."

Spock was seriously taken aback. In his head he could hear his mother telling him to try to get along with the other kids. "You have my apologies if I have offended you in some way, but I do not understand your animosity toward logical thought."

Bones sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'm not surprised in the least. I don't expect you to understand."

He honestly wasn't sure if Spock was capable of it.

Spock was beginning to feel like he'd missed something important in this conversation. "You seem to have some sort of preconceived notion of me," he tried, "yet I am certain we have never met before."

"We haven't met," he said. Which was true, kind of. "Do my illogical preconceived notions bother you?"

Well now Bones was just teasing him.
