I think the hardest thing about settling into a new state is adjusting to their pace of life. When I moved to New Mexico, I had to get used to their slow way of living in the Southwest... there was no hurry for anything, very little stress and excessive friendliness. People talked, ate and drove slowly. I would become frustrated at the gas station, because attendants would want to chat with me, and I was on my way back out the door. But slowly, I got accustomed to their slow drawls and even grew to like it. When I moved back to Michigan, I had to adjust back to the Michigan pace of life.
Now that I’m in Illinois -- even the suburbs! -- I am finding that I don’t move fast enough for anyone. I don’t drive aggressively enough and I linger over the fruits at the grocery store too long, apparently. I caused a scene yesterday trying to make a left-hand turn at a busy intersection with no stoplight during rush hour, which is another concept I’m not really used to. Other cars had the guts to pull out and make the traffic stop. Not me, I was waiting patiently for my turn when cars began lining up behind me and trying to get around. Whoops.
I’m sure I’ll get used to it here, also, and pretty soon I’ll be tapping my foot impatiently behind Michiganders. haha.
