Welcome to back to the club of people who actually post, I'm a returning member also.
I'm glad to know someone who might just possibly be a *little* busier than I am. So far I have 2 research papers due at the end of this semester, plus one history test, plus concerts, practice, lessons and a host of other music-related activities (see my journal for slightly more detail). I however, don't have the luck of a girlfriend(fiance)-in-the-same-city, so I also have trips to and from Tuscaloosa to factor in, but, lucky being in music, I can do some "work" just by listening on those trips - it would be significantly harder to read while driving.
I think you're idea of a critical essay on a movie as a stepping stone to writing about books is a good idea, especially depending on where you are/will be teaching, and how much experience they have with reading critically. I agree that you shouldn't do it on a movie based on a book, kids already think that those are sometimes interchangeable. Having not seen Life is Beautiful, I can't comment on that one, but I can certainly see high school aged kids writing and enjoying O Brother Where Art Thou? As for getting the administration/other teachers to see your purpose in doing this, good luck, as it probably depends on what kind of admin you are (un)fortunante enough to get involved with.
Overall though, sounds like a very original and good idea.
