an interpretation of Shakespeare's R and J

Jun 02, 2011 00:32

Antebellum, 19th century. The Capulet plantation is in Virginia. The Montagues are a family of white abolitionists, from Georgetown. Mantua is now east of the Anacostia River.
The Nurse is a house slave who served as wet nurse for Juliet. She's fond of Juliet, but side-eyes the rest of the Capulets really hard, particularly Samson and Gregory when the two men are out watching the outdoor slaves while talking about cutting off maidenheads. Nurse is disgusted.
Lady Capulet secretly hates her life and resents everyone in it on account of she got married off to Lord Capulet and was roped into popping out a baby way too young.
Mercutio is the son of escaped slaves and a skilled carpenter. His final line of "A plague on both your houses" is even more loaded than Shakespeare intended it to be.
Benvolio is now Benvolia, and she is a midwife. Romeo feels comfortable confiding in her. She is not part of the fray in Act I Scene 1. She comes on the same time Lord and Lady Montague come on.
