The Lightning Thief

Spoilers ahead. Except not.
I watched The Lightning Thief on Valentine's Day with my cousin and it was awesome. They deviated a bit from the book though. And I hate Pierce Brosnan because he's Team Polanski. But it was a fantastic movie. It was also Dawson casting like woah. And they turned Annabeth into a composite of Annabeth and Clarisse and apparently Rachel Elizabeth Dare whom I have yet to meet because I've only read the first two books and am searching high and low for the opportunity to find book three. And I found myself attracted to Percy even though he's supposed to be twelve. The actor's actually 18, but even that's kinda young for me, I mean that's either a college first year or a high school senior. Not good. But! But! This can cancel out my inappropriate crush on a guy who's 15 years my senior! So it's all good!
My only bone of contention is Grover. I like seeing racial diversity in casting as much as anyone, but they ALSO turned Grover into a manwhore. And there's an unfortunate stereotype about black men being hypersexual. (It's also true for black women, and it's right alongside the Mammy image, and it's part of how white slave owners got away with raping their female slaves left and right, because why would a red-blooded man rape the unsexy Mammy? Nevermind that that's exactly what they were doing... and to *this* day the welfare queen stereotype comes from the idea that black women are uncontrollably hypersexual and slutty or something...boo racism /tangent) I mean, I get that he's a satyr, so in a way this is more apt, because satyrs are hypersexual, so it's actually an improvement over the books. Still though. They also upheld the hypersexual satyr-esque black man stereotype while they were at it. Oh well.
I mean, Grover was still cool and all, it's just...yeah.

stereotypes, tv tropes, percy jackson, cute boys, movies, unfortunate implications
