Here's the ice cream (well, frozen yogurt) cake I made for a friend's Fourth of July party:
I was planning flavors the day before, and made a passing joke about putting a flag cake together. But
fairdice and I kept brainstorming about how to do it and a few hours later I was making the various batches: raspberry, blueberry, and honey-vanilla frozen yogurt. The last was made with Greek style thick (and very rich) yogurt, and the other two with standard yogurt.
All three recipes were taking (with minor variations) from
The Perfect Scoop, by
David Lebovitz (link goes to his blog) . The raspberry was made from a bag of frozen berries, and lime instead of lemon, and I added a couple of tablespoons of honey to the vanilla recipe.
It didn't occur to me that the kids would all want stars (despite being told that they were exactly the same as the white stripes). If I do any such thing again, I'll have to make as many of the cut-outs as possible.
