[Vash had been fortunate enough to avoid the violence and chaos that had erupted in the streets of Mayfield.  No letter had come to him that he was aware of.  He was ignorant of the tension in the air between the hunters and the hunted.

[Himeno is being very cautious about who she opens the door to right now. But she remembers Vash and didn't think he seemed like someone to kill for a stupid reason like the ones they had been given. So she opens the door and looks over the picture. She remembers Meryl too from their brief conversation.]

...She's dead?

[mayflychaser]

[Vash definitely appreciated that.]

...loss of blood. And she...didn't return the next morning. I thought people were supposed to do that here.

[white_pretear]

[She looks sad. People shouldn't be dying like this. She should have been able to help.]

I'm afraid I don't know anything. I've been staying inside ever since I got that letter...

[mayflychaser]

Well I'm...actually very relieved to see you safe, honestly.

[Blink.]

...Letter?

[white_pretear]

Yeah. I got a letter about the census. It told me I was supposed to kill someone and that someone was assigned to kill me.

...That's probably what happened to her, too.

[mayflychaser]

...she had a letter of some kind I saw. It was blank however. I thought it might have been a delivery from the post office.

You didn't choose to kill though?

[white_pretear]

Of course! I could never kill someone, especially for something that's probably a trick.

Maybe only the person who it was sent to can see what's written on them.

[mayflychaser]

[Vash manages to smile sadly at Himeno's words.]

You have a good heart.

That seems like a lot of protection...who were you told to kill?

[white_pretear]

I just wish more people here thought the same way...

Somebody named Schuldig. I don't even know who he is.

[mayflychaser]

I do too. ...the woman's name was Meryl. I think...she also felt that way.

I haven't heard that name though. Not that it matters.

[white_pretear]

She was nice when I talked to her...I hope these deaths won't last. It's just too awful to see everyone like this.

[mayflychaser]

Yeah...

[Vash pauses for a moment.]

I suddenly don't want to leave you alone while all this is happening. Will you be alright?

[white_pretear]

[She smiles gratefully.]

Thanks...but I think I'll be okay. I'm sticking to the house and I can defend myself pretty well. You should look out for yourself.

[mayflychaser]

[Vash nods, forcing the best smile he can muster.]

[He then heads off to the next house without another word.]
