First off, thank you to everyone for your birthday wishes! They were all much appreciated, especially since I didn't do anything at all for my birthday this year.
So much to say! Shall I split it into different posts so there is more coherence? Here goes.
So about Athens and Greece and the whole damn mess:
Leading up to the referendum was a crazy time. Everyone was a little bit scared and a little bit crazy. The media - who are in the pocket of the rich oligarchs who are the only ones winning out of this whole mess - where trying their hardest to push for a yes vote by terrorising people and throwing a ton of mud at the government. It got so bad that several news outlets were given severe warnings from the relevant watchdog and afterwards two journalists were taken to court.
And lets not forget the threats that the banks would stay closed for months and our deposits would be stolen.
It backfired though. The sold out, the terminally fearful and wimpy, the rich with money abroad, the blind party sheep obviously voted yes. A number of people were made so crazy and paranoid that they short-circuited and either didn't vote (like my father who was disgusted by the whole affair) or voted blank (like a friend who had a panic attack in the voting cubicle). In the end the no vote won.
Voted at my local school. I have never felt so anxious when casting my ballot before. #referendum #greece #thefutureisuncertain
The euro plummeted, markets went crazy and when our prime minister returned for re-negotiations they decided to make an example of us and essentially blackmailed him into accepting a deal so shitty and inhumane it breaks several EU laws as stated in the Maastricht Treaty. Now the situation amongst people back home is oscillating between mad rage and grim depression.
So yeah.
And I am yet again feeling like a coward and a sell out for running away from it all instead of staying to fight.
