event sign-ups: every time a bell rings
The night before December 17th, many characters in Mayfield will have a dream. Those characters that do will be shown the damage they caused their home, and how much better everything in their life would have been if they had never existed. They will be told Mayfield is in danger, and one person is needed to make a sacrifice to allow everyone else to survive.
They will make a choice: be erased from existence, or allow a catastrophe.
The morning of December 17th, every single character will wake up in their beds as usual, remembering the strange vision clearly, and able to see it for what it was: only a dream. However, those who chose in the dream to erase themselves will wake to something strange: no one recognizes them. Oh, everyone remembers them, but they will believe the erased characters vanished in the night. You're nothing more than a copy provided by Mayfield, a sinister and inadequate replacement.
And over time? Everyone will start to forget you ever existed.
If your character chose to erase themselves, you need to sign up in the thread below. Sign-ups will close on December 16th at 11:59 PM.
Since we know this is confusing, here is more information about what is happening:
The Dream - It is completely optional for your character to have had this dream. If they did, they were guided by someone. The guide may appear to be a loved one not present in Mayfield and possibly deceased at home, or a stranger who seems immediately trustworthy. The guide will show every participating character the destruction that will happen to Mayfield, the destruction your character caused in their own world, how good their own world would have been if they had never been born, and how good Mayfield would be if they vanished.
Specifically what your character saw and was told is up to you, as long as it generally follows those guidelines: the intention is to convince characters that they should vanish completely. As a note, though, your character may not get a glimpse into their real canon future, or learn about canon events they don't already know about. These visions are fake.
Whether your character knows the visions are fake is also up to you. Generally, the dreams will operate under that kind of dream logic where no matter how absurd what is happening is, to you it seems entirely real. However, if you want your character's dream to have been less than convincing, that's okay.
Waking Up - In the morning on December 17th, a news bulletin will play with a list of every character who chose to erase themselves, announcing that they are gone. The erased characters will still be here, but to everyone else, they will seem like a fake, a doppleganger. The doppleganger looks and talks like the erased person, and isn't even acting like a drone exactly, but something about them will seem so entirely wrong that there is no doubt in your mind that they are something sinister planted by Mayfield, and not a real person at all no matter what they try to tell you. This is not something we're leaving up to players. No one will be able to tell the erased characters aren't really fakes; it's too obvious that they are. The erased characters will also seem like fakes to other erased characters, although it's okay if characters use logic to figure out the other erased characters are real to. The point is that erased characters just seem deeply wrong to everyone else.
Non-Erased Characters - Even if your character does not sign up to participate, something may be happening to them as well. Your characters will gradually begin to forget the erased characters. It will start small, forgetting details, forgetting they existed for only a minute or an hour, but gradually they will begin to forget more often and more completely. Eventually they may not remember the person at all. If your characters' personality would be any different had an erased character never existed, they may start experiencing personality changes, too. Small changes at first, but they may eventually completely become the person they would be if the erased character had never existed.
