It was due to the recent droning of one of the people she trusted in town that had drawn her out of her house. Marie was gone at first, and then Hughes. The mechanical conversations at her home were doing an admirable job of driving Hungary to distraction, or close to it.

Very apprehensively, hands fisting and unclenching the fabric of her skirt, she stood near the window, her eyes alighting on the driveway every once in a while.

Jane opens the door to the house and leans out, waving.

"Oh, Elizabeta, yoohoo! Did you want to come in?"

"Ahaha," the laughter came selfconsciously, if unmediated, "I was about to see if there was anyone I knew, first..."

She realized a moment too late that she should have brought a gift of sort. Wasn't that the custome in these parts?

"Don't be silly, dear. We're all friends here."

"Well, of course."

Shoulders squared back, fingers laced together, she followed the hostess back into the house, craning her neck for any familiar face about.

"Would you mind giving me a hand in the kitchen? I have a stew to be finishing and the rolls aren't quite done."

At the sound of familiar territory, Hungary's reservations slid down a bit, "Of course not. It must be a handful, entertaining such a large number of people."

Fraternizing so closely with the less than trustworthy locals might not have been a sound idea, but she needed something to do, and someone's trust to gain. Following Jane to the spacious kitchen, Hungary's first instinct was to check for signs of normalcy around.

"That's quite a lot of people to be cooking for. What prompted the invite?"

"Oh, I just thought it would be fun to have the neighbors over. And Jack's just had a promotion at work."

"That's a lot of neighbors..."

Her eyes flitted to the preparation surface, then the oven, "I'm not really much of a cook. My former husband took care of that.

"Is that a--" she all but skipped to the end of the counter, where the cookware was displayed neatly, "Is that a teflon frying pan?"

"Jack always buys me the very latest. That was my birthday present."

She reached for the pan almost lovingly, admiringly the make, "Your husband sounds so sweet. My marriage was, ah, different."

"Is that right? Are you not getting along?"

Jane sounds suddenly interested.

She catches herself a moment too late, "Oh, that's not it at all! I meant my former husband! The one I ha-- I'm married to now is a perfect gentleman."

Even as a drone Hughes was not acting out of the ordinary, if a little bit dumber.

"Don't be silly, Elizabeta. I know you've never been married. Are you sure everything is all right?" Jane pauses, stirring the stew. "It just seems that so many couples are having troubles lately. It's really not my place to say, of course..."
