[it's not like Ray isn't used to creepy abandoned buildings, but there's always something in them that functions under the pretense of living, no matter how twisted that is. ghosts are one thing. this is something completely new altogether.

the only light visible in his vicinity comes from the small flashlight he's brought from his house. he's barely a few feet into the lobby when he sees the body, and the sight alone makes him want to puke.]

...Jesus.

[Egon follows closely behind Ray to avoid being left in the dark. There's plenty to trip on in here. He squints in the dark to attempt to make out whatever stopped Ray in his tracks.

Scrunching his nose slightly, he steps up a little closer.]

It's the mayor.

[Slowly turning to investigate for other clues, Egon shakes his head.] This makes very little sense.

[it really doesn't. Ray takes a deep breath, subsequently inhaling and choking on the ash filled air, and tries to avert his gaze from the body. for someone who surrounds himself with the dead day in and day out, he really isn't used to being around an actual body; especially one that only got to be the way it was due to self-inflicted means.]

...I don't trust him. You know how this town handles dying. He'll be back.

[it's not a comforting thought. truth be told, it might be better that Doe remains dead, but they aren't going to pull any clues from a corpse. at least not now.

swiveling the flashlight away from the body, Ray narrows his eyes when the beam illuminates a slip of paper laying on the front desk. he grabs it and begins reading.

then his eyes widen and he shakes his head.]

I guess he died the way he lived: hating our guts. [he shakes his head derisively and hands the note over to Egon.]

[Egon isn't any more comfortable around dead bodies, he just hides his uneasiness better, actually stepping up close to the body to inspect it for any of the usual tricks.]

I'm not so sure, Ray. From what I heard, when the first police chief died he stayed that way. I think it's different with the people who have some sort of official position here. When they're gone, they're gone for good.

Besides, if that weren't the case, what would suicide really accomplish?

[He carefully picks his way through the rubble back over to Ray to take the letter and read it for himself.]

It's interesting how they seem to want us to be happy here and then turn around and make it sound like we're pests to be exterminated.

Maybe he'd rather take death than deal with... [well, this. all of this. he waves the flashlight around the ruined lobby to get the point across.]

Tell me about it. Why go through the trouble to hold us here if they hate us? We didn't even do anything.

[it's a very bad opportunity to be frustrated. if he reaches that point, he won't be able to stay calm; with all that's happening, all he can do is keep a cool head and approach things logically as they come.

glancing back over to the body with a hard frown, Ray starts making his way back to it.]

I'm gonna check his pockets. Start looking through those drawers.

[The chances of actually finding anything of interest seem pretty slim, but it's at least worth looking. Egon nods and moves carefully around behind the desk, checking each drawer, though mostly having to feel around as the only light source went with Ray.]

I'm not finding anything. He covered his tracks pretty thoroughly.

[He pushes in the last drawer and kicks at some rubble on his way over to Ray.]

What about you? Any luck?

[so it would seem. a datebook, receipt, or, hell, even car keys would be useful right now - anything. Ray just about turns the corpse over, having overcome his nausea about touching the rotting thing, but he finds nothing as he goes through Doe's pockets. he remains crouched, head hung.]

Nothing. [which was likely the bastard's intent to begin with. even in death, he's spiting them.]

You know, it's likely that someone else was here before us. Though if anything's already been taken it would be impossible to know for sure.

[He uses his foot to spread a few papers on the floor, most of which are charred beyond legibility.]

Someone mentioned a meeting place at the high school. We might be able to get more information if we go there.
