[Early in the morning on July 5th, after Jane Smith's uncharacteristic behavior was put to an end, were someone to go on a walk throughout the park, they might come across an unusual sight ( Read more... )

[ Garviel kneels by the corpse. He's seen enough in his day to know them well. He looks down at the human, puzzled, since he'd never met the smiths ]

What.... happened here?

[There is a little girl sitting next to her, folding a paper crane.]

Her name was Samantha.

[ Garviel's body turns slowly. That voice. He's only heard one person who sounds quite like that. ]

I... see.

[ He removes his helmet, scenting the air for a moment, something of the feral about him ]

Do you know why this happened? [ Someone like her just might, from what she told him before. ]

She was starting to wake up.

I saw her talking to Grady yesterday. I think he killed her.

This... does not look like the form of someone who died from murder. Was she given... mercy?

I didn't see it.

But I believe she wanted to die.

[And Ai finishes the crane and places it gently in the dead woman's hand.]

It has been said that sometimes the only thing we can choose is our time and place of death. Personally, I do not subscribe to this belief but...

[ He looks at the crane, finally, and says ]

You do honor to the dead then?

She deserved better.

[As did the Russian man that she had left a paper crane by.]

Everyone here does. Is she gone for good then? I didn't know that was possible here.

It usually isn't.

But I think she is. ...Just like the Russian man.

[She'd reminded him of his daughter.....she wished she'd have been able to help him.]

I see. And what were the circumstances surrounding that? From what I have gathered that took place before I was here. [ Garviel for a moment wonders why he is asking her, then realizes that despite his discomfort with her nature, she has been completely honest with him, as far as he knows. Her disturbing demeanor is just that... disturbing, not dishonest. ]

It started a year ago. On the 4th of July. The entire changed to reflect a Russian model. It was just as inaccurate as this town is. They claimed they were rescuing us.

However they began handing out random impossible tasks and killing and maiming those who could not get them done. Then the Mayfield group managed to steal us back.

A strange Russian man appeared, going from house to house. He spoke of a world that was destroyed by war. And that the two groups, the one we had just left and the one in charge here were trying to escape it. He couldn't control his random teleporting and eventually he was found and killed by the people in charge here.

Interesting. You have given me much to contemplate about the nature of this place.

[ There is a long silence, easily a minute or two. ]

Thank you.

[Ai remains silent the entire time.]

You're welcome.

I'm not sure if there is anything I can do here... I don't know much about how mortals treated their dead in this time. Do you think we should bury her? Burn her?

For now we should leave her. People need to know what has happened.
