Character Name: Picky Minch Character Series: Earthbound/Mother 2 Character Age: 8 Background: Picky Minch is the youngest child of the Minch family. His mother Lardna is likely an alcoholic, his father Aloysius is an abusive and greedy man, and his older brother Pokey is a time-travelling alien-supporting world-threatening child tyrant.
Now, let's back this up a bit...
Once upon a time in Eagleland, a place that resembles nothing so much as an idealized America, a meteor fell from the sky. This meteor crashed just outside of the town of Onett, where Pokey, Picky, and their neighbor Ness lived. Kids being kids, they all jumped out of bed, changed out of their jammies, and ran to the impact site. Well, not Picky. Mom and dad were off at an elegant restaurant. Picky was left behind to watch the house while his brother checked out the big deal at the top of the hill. With parents as brutally strict as the Minches, measures needed to be taken to keep from getting in lots of trouble. But alas, the Onett police department already had it barricaded the meteor off.
Ness gave up and went home to return to bed, while Pokey had been waiting for his chance. When some of the police officers went back to town to deal with some delinquents, he rushed back home to get Picky. Picky had to see this. And Picky did see it, nice and up close with his brother... but this close? It was spooky. It was dark, the meteor was glowing, there were noises in the distance... Pokey ran away. Picky remained at the top of the hill, not the least bit scared. Well... maybe a little scared. He was up there alone. And his brother was nowhere to be found. Exhausted, Picky settled himself down near some bushes, and drifted off to sleep.
He was woken up by Pokey and his neighbor Ness, who had come looking for him. Picky, relieved and a little exasperated with his brother, got up, brushed himself off, and was ready to return home. But as they passed the strange glowing meteor again, they heard a faint buzzing. A light emerged from the rock, and with it a bee-like creature named Buzz-Buzz. It was from the future, it claimed, a future where something called Giygas had plunged the world into darkness. Three boys and a girl were fated to save the world, and their neighbor Ness was apparently one of them. Big brother Pokey expressed shock and horror at the idea. And he hoped that he wasn't one of those boys. He wasn't up for that. Picky held his tongue. This was pretty scary, but... pretty cool, too.
Heroes and non-heroes alike, they headed back down the hill. When almost home, they were intercepted by some sort of silver spaceman, and attacked. Ness and Buzz-Buzz fought him off bravely. Picky made his best effort to help, throwing punches where he could. Pokey mostly kept to the back, muttered anxiously, and did nothing of any use. The way was clear, the evening was saved, and the Minch boys returned safely home... to find their parents waiting for them. Uh oh. Without anything else being said, Pokey and Picky were sent up to their rooms and harshly punished by their father. Picky, all fleeting thoughts of heroism and aliens and bees having been beaten out of his head, retreated to bed.
The next days were the same, and yet... not the same. Pokey had begun to act strangely, muttering to himself and being withdrawn. He began to miss classes. Then entire days of school. And finally, Pokey disappeared from the house entirely. The prospect of being left alone to deal with mom and dad was really scary... at least it eventually became only mom around the house. Dad had gone off to the big city of Fourside to, apparently, go into business with someone Pokey knew.
Something wasn't right, but what could one little kid do? The sky over Onett grew dark. Something was very, very wrong. Strange and horrible things from space lurked, creatures sent by that Giygas... and where was Pokey? Was Pokey safe? Pokey really wouldn't have anything to do with this, would he? A little brother's faith could go a long way. It could put up with all kinds of testing. Even when, as the skies cleared and the monsters retreated, the letter that showed up in the mailbox with his brother's handwriting on the front wasn't for him.
It was for Ness. From next door. Ness, the boy who really was a hero. The kid that everyone was saying beat back the monsters and saved everyone. What else could Picky do but deliver it? And the letter wasn't even an explanation or an apology. It was a call-out to Ness, a "come and get me, jerkface" message. What the heck had his brother been doing all this time?
He never knew. He never found out. Pokey never came home. Dad never returned from Fourside, having become a miserable drunk. Mom remarried immediately, and spend even more of her time ignoring him. Life... well, it could have been worse. It was better, in some ways. Neglectful inattention was better than being unable to sit from all the spanking. But Picky still missed his brother. On clear nights, he'd climb that hill again, and wait at the top, hoping maybe that something else would fall from the sky. And maybe that something else would be Pokey.
Personality: Picky is the kind of kid that blends in, and is easy to overlook. His clothes are baggy and his bangs are shaggy, hiding his eyes. It's not so much that he purposely tries to be a loner. It's just... hard to make friends, when your family has a reputation for being awful and unpleasant. Pokey's reputation for being a pain had begun to rub off on him, and he could see no way to counter it. And no reason to, really. As nice as it would have been to have more friends, his big brother was his big brother. And he wasn't so bad.
Picky is loyal to those that have treated him well, and his brother was the only member of his family to show care and kindness. In his own... Pokey kind of way. Dad was verbally and physically abusive, mom was disconnected and neglectful, but Pokey cared. Sometimes. He'd act like he didn't, but his actions spoke louder than his words. There were more than a few occasions where Picky had dropped a dish or made too much noise and would have been punished, but Pokey stepped in to take the blame instead. In a household as oppressive and dreadful as the Minch's, little things like that came to mean a lot. He can forgive his brother for his worse moments. He can maybe even forgive him for vanishing like he did.
Way, way deep down inside, Picky would like to be a cool hero. He knows that cool heroes aren't just in comics or video games or tv. They're real. He has one as his next-door neighbor. He often has doubts that he could manage it. The bee didn't talk to him. Pokey didn't take him... wherever it was that Pokey went. But he won't let go of that little piece of hope. He knows that he's at least brave enough to try, and that counts for something. He punched that Starman. He punched that Starman with all his might. Even a punch has to count for something. Heroes have to have a first punch, right?
Quiet and guarded as he may be, Picky will try his best and give his all to whatever task is presented to him. He takes his homework seriously, and he's reasonably intelligent for an 8 year old kid. Even if the assignment seems impossible, he'll try and find a way to make it work. He especially enjoys staying after school for activities. (Anything to get out of the house.) Although he's not very good at sports, he likes any club that involves being indoors and learning something neat. He'll do chores with a minimum of fussing, having grown up in a household that highly discouraged fussing. He's quite good at them, having had to pick up the slack for a mother that wouldn't lift a finger.
The disappearance of his brother has left a hole in Picky's world. Harsh as those days together might have been, they were days together. He misses his big brother's company, as bad-tempered and variable as it could be. And he misses being able to keep an eye on his big brother to help him. Goodness knows that Pokey needs his help. He was always losing socks and shoes, not tucking his sheets in right, mouthing off at teachers... where Pokey was easy to dislike, Picky could be a calm, reasonable voice that could de-escalate a situation. He worries about the kind of situations his brother must be getting in, far away as he must be now.
Abilities: Picky is a normal kid, with no powers to speak of other than his courage and his good sense.
Sample Entry 1:
[Down at the Mayfield comic shop, Picky is taking advantage of the lax work ethic of the non-drone guy behind the cash. If things were operating properly, they'd be yelling at him to stop reading the comics. But he was reading those comics. He was so reading those comics, and not paying a cent for it, and it was great.
So far he's managed to read issues 1 to 8 of Ultraguy, and he's just finishing off 9. As he folds it shut and puts it back on the rack, he goes looking for 10, and...
And where's 10? There's no issue 10? There's an issue 11, but no 10! And 10 was going to have part two of a two-part story!]
U-uh...
[Hesitantly, he approaches the first real person in the shop that he sees.]
Have... have you seen issue 10 of Ultraguy?
...it's important. It's really important.
Sample Entry 2:
[A hesitant voice comes through on the phone lines.]
Hey. I don't think this place has 911, but...
Everyone in the house just got sick. Except for me. They're all... throwing up, and looking green, and stuff.
[The sound on the line becomes muffled, then.]
No, no, don't throw up on the...!
Oh, man....
[His tone sounds pained, now.]
Are they going to croak? Kick the bucket? You know... die? Uh, if.. if they do or if they don't, we're going to need more mops.
