Background: Engie biography Seeing as most of the canon stuff is for the BLU Engie, most of the RED Engie's past will be head canon.

Benjamin Williamson grew up in Texas in a nice little house akin to the ones in Mayfield. Unlike his BLU counterpart, he wasn't born into a family of Engineers; rather, his father was a door-to-door salesman. He did alright in the day, earning enough to put food on the table for his family. It was also, unfortunate enough, sufficient so that he would always have a constant source of alcohol in the house. Every night, Benjamin's mother would quickly rush the boy to the cupboard and hide him there from his drunken father's wrath. She would take the punishment on herself instead. That didn't mean that Benjamin escaped all the time; he had his fair amount of smacks and punches from his father. But they didn't hold a candle to what he did to his mother.

His mother was the total opposite of his father. Mrs Williamson was a kind, gentle soul who raised her son to never stray from doing what was right. She brought Benjamin up as a God-fearing Christian, taking the maxim love others as you love yourself to an extreme when she refused to let others know that her husband was beating her up. However, she would not stop from threatening him with the law when it came to Benjamin. She was also the one who started Benjamin's quest for knowledge. Every afternoon after school, Benjamin wouldn't stop to play with the other kids. Instead he'd head back home immediately to see help his mother with household chores. The faster she was done, the faster they could start on his studying.

It had been a tradition started by his mother, that slowly developed into something more over the years. Every day, he'd come back home and go through with his mother all that he had learned in school. Maths, English, History, Geography, whatever it was, his mother would listen and help him understand. She had a part-time job as a seamstress, and whatever funds she had left over after spending for the family was invested into her son's education. She bought him books on subjects that he was keen on, encouraged him to read and to learn as much as he could. To her, education was the key out of this prison that they were both in, and she imparted that on Benjamin from a very young age. Both son and mother bonded over his lessons even as they grew in complexity. From preschool to elementary to high school, Benjamin would spend his afternoons with his mother as they poured over his books. It was clear from the start though that Benjamin was a genius in the making; it became even more obvious when he started solving problems that were much more advanced than his level. And eventhough his mother could no longer keep up with him, she made sure to always be the listening ear to his theories and findings, trying her best to understand. Benjamin loved those afternoons with her, not only because he was learning, but also because he could spend time with her. Those afternoons were a temporary relief from the pain that would come at night, and they helped him to bare with the horrible sounds that his bedroom door could not completely block out when his father started on his mother again.

Eventually, Benjamin graduated from high school early by two years. However, when his mother failed to appear on the day of his graduation, he immediately left to check on her, ignoring the jeers of his peers who labelled him a "momma's boy". When he got home, he wasn't greeted with her usual sunny smile. Instead, he got her broken body, with blood pooling under her. His father had gotten more violent than usual for one reason or another, and had accidentally shoved his mother out the window. The fragile woman didn't survive the fall from the second floor and died on impact, while his father was finally arrested by the local police and sent to jail.

As for Benjamin, he pulled himself together to finish off what he and his mother had envisioned for him; a place in the top university, leading to a dream job. His perfect scores and coupled sob story quickly lead to him being offered a scholarship to start college albeit his young age, and he swore to himself that he wouldn't let his mother down in death. He took to college easily, and went off to university to continue studying. After obtaining his first two degrees, he took to continuing his education while juggling a part-time job. It wasn't until he had nine more PhDs under his belt did he finally stop. During those years, he had found himself a wife who saw past the quiet, shy Texan and who fell in love with his big heart. He became a father of a baby girl and found himself the dream job that he always wanted; building and maintaining the rides at Disneyland. Life was good, and he thought he had done his mother proud.

However, things hardly ever end that way.

One day he got a call from his old town. His father, who had been in jail for the whole time, had gotten himself involved in a fight with another inmate. The resulting fist-fight had left his father with an injury that left him in a coma, and chances were that he wouldn't make it.

Benjamin took the first flight he could back to Texas, with all intention of saving his father's life with a new invention he had created; the prototype Dispenser. He thought that after nearly 20 years away from the man, he could finally look him in the eye without feeling like murdering his father. When he finally arrived though, the sight of the one man he hated more than anything else seemed to be breaking down inside him. He still left the dispenser there for the day, and sure enough it worked. But when he came again at night and saw his father sleeping peacefully there, as if he did not have a care in the world, now THAT pushed the man over a line that he always made sure to stay far away from. With a pillow in hand, Benjamin tried to murder his own father through suffocation. The older man actually woke up during the process and struggled against him, but Benjamin was much stronger than he was. However, Benjamin suddenly stopped when he realised, to his horror, that he was enjoying this. It wasn't an act of vengeance; it was something more sadistic and evil than that. He quickly fled the hospital and surrendered himself up to the police.

While detained at the police station, he was visited by a mysterious gentlemen in red who offered him a chance of parole, if he accepted a certain job that required his Engineering skills. Benjamin nearly said no, but realised that if he were to decline he would be leaving his wife and his daughter with no one to support them. Reluctantly he agreed and was immediately shipped off to his first RED base at Dustbowl. The rest is history.

Benjamin has been working in RED for only a few years before he ended up in Mayfield.

Personality : Benjamin is a Southern Gentleman. He's soft-spoken, polite, kind, friendly, gentle, honest, great with the kids, humble, helpful, and he's that one man that will always have your back no matter what. He's slow to anger, but quick to forgive. His upbringing by his mother has instilled a fierce sense of right and wrong within him that's complimented by a heart that's way bigger than short stature. He'll help even those he doesn't know, even at his own expense. To him, not helping is the same as encouraging those who are doing wrong to continue, and that's something he's not willing to let slip by. However, he's a bit of a quiet guy as well; he'll still chat and have a beer with you, but he might prefer the company of his machines at times more.

Benjamin is also curious and hardworking; these traits have helped him tremendously in his career as an Engineer. If he sees something that catches his eye, he will try to figure out how it works, what it does, and how he can replicate it. His determination to see a project to the finish has made him a great asset for RED as he continuously designs machines that continue to get better and better.

Another point to make about Benjamin is how bad he actually is at making conversation. Yes, he is friendly and cheerful, but he barely knows how to hold a conversation at times. He doesn't have a problem with striking up conversation with strangers, especially those who look a bit lost. It just doesn't mean that he'll be able to hold the conversation for a long time. It gets even worse with women. His wife and his mother have been the only two women in his life that he's actually comfortable with; other women, especially those with voluptuous bodies, will make this cowboy from the South blush and stutter like a school kid. The fact remains that he's lived most of his lives in books and machines that he can barely think of any other topics to talk about outside the two.

Benjamin is also a giant mother hen. If he sees someone who needs taking care off, you can bet that he'll be there in the whisk of an eye to offer a shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen. It's practically his default setting to always look out for those who do need looking out. He is also very trusting, and is willing to give people the benefit of the doubt. However, he is not naive, and he will call you out if you're trying to spin him a yarn.

Unknown to him and those around him, Benjamin has the MAOA gene. The MAOA gene is also known as the warrior gene and what it means is that Benjamin actually takes pleasure in hurting others and is predisposed to violent behaviour. His upbringing by his loving mother has helped to nerf this, but the years of seeing his mother abused by his father had actually caused him to snap when he finally met the man once again after nearly two decades of no communication whatsoever. Other than that one encounter with his father though, Benjamin has not felt the urge to kill or murder anyone else due to his mother's teachings. He believes himself to be a lover of peace and harmony in the house, and would actually prefer to talk things over than result to force. However, hurting those who he cares about will earn you no reprieve from Benjamin. He WILL hunt you down with his Frontier Justice and shoot bullets through your brain if you touch a hair on his family's head, and he will ENJOY it. He may feel sorry about it later, but in the heat of the moment he will not hesitate to injure you in as many painful ways as possible. Consider it a result of all those years when he had to suppress his own fury when his father beat up his mother and him. Benjamin himself does not like this aspect of himself, and he fears it as a total loss of control and a sense of betrayal to his believes and to the memory of his dead mother. People might catch a glimpse of Engie's dark side, especially when he dishes those Revenge Crits on people with his Frontier Justice. A few years of building killer sentries in RED has also resulted in him developing a taste for seeing people blown up, something which he's trying to stop.

Other things that put Benjamin off include being rude to others, especially women, unnecessary and cruel violence, as well as dishonesty and disrespecting others. He also tends to get lost in his own little world sometimes, especially when he's designing a new machine.

He is a pretty religious Christian as well. He truly does believe in the doctrine and its claims. However, he does respect the believes of others and he'll try his best to adjust to them. He does have friends who are non-Christians from his world, after all. Nevertheless, engaging in certain behaviour will get him very uncomfortable, although he would try to hide it. For example, he will quickly look in another direction if he sees two men kissing each other. Or he might excuse himself from the place if two people start getting very "touchy" with each other. His religious views will make him, in a way, a conservation man.

Abilities: Benjamin is a born genuis and is extremely good with machinery. However, his other PhDs do not always involve engineering. Benjamin is actually qualified as a practising doctor as well. His eleven PhDs include a Masters in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Biomedical and Aeronautical Engineering, as well as in Advanced Math, Advanced Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Medicine. While he may shine as an Engineer, he is also qualified to give simple medical treatment, like setting a bone or treating a disease. He can even attempt minor surgeries if he has a book or another doctor to guide him. Anything more is beyond that for him though.

He's below average when it comes to handling guns though, and PE was and still is the bane of his life.

Benjamin is also a master at building machines. He builds killer sentries, life-saving dispensers and reality-warping teleporters on a daily basis and with such ease that it seems that he's just whacking away at a pile of metal that suddenly materialises into a full blown machine with minutes. He can design his own machines as well, and he's good enough to be able to look a machine and figure out how it works, why it works and how to build it himself. This of course depends on how complex the machine is, but generally there is no machine out there that can escape him.

He can also play the guitar, deal a decent poker hand and makes a mean chilli.

He's below average when it comes to handling guns though, and PE was and still is the bane of his life.

Sample Entry 1: (Benjamin when greeting someone new to Mayfield)
Son, just calm down. You're panickin' like it's the second coming of the Good Lord himself. This place ain't exactly Heaven on Earth, but it's nowhere as bad as Hell. Just sit yourself down and relax, and I'll explain things to ya nice and slow. This quiet lil town here is called Mayfield, and I'm afraid ta say that you've been rustled off from home. There ain't no way outta here for now, but my momma always used ta say that God looks out for us, so I'm gonna keep trusting that He'll get me outta here one day. You might not be a prayin' man, but if there's one thing you gotta believe in, it's that we'll all get outta here someday. Keep that in mind boy, and you'll do fine here.

Now, umm...I guess I should go through some of the basics. Some things that ya might need ta look out for in Mayfield: first off, don't drink the milk cause it's poisoned. Next, don't piss off any of the locals here. That'd be the Smith family, the Mayor and the Milkman. I wouldn't trust the Postman as far as I can throw'im either, and I'm no Roger Hornsby I can tell ya that. Lastly, stay out of trouble with the law. The local sheriff here's one mean mother hubbard; he won't hesitate ta make bacon outta ya if he gets the chance. I don't know whether y'all one of them hero types, and I'm not saying that's wrong or anythin', but sometimes a man's gotta know how ta pick his fights.

Hmm...I guess that's about as much as I can remember. You got any other questions for me, son? Can't promise that I have all the answers, but I'll do my best. Name's Ben, by the way, but my friends call me Engie. What's yours?

Sample Entry 2: (When Benjamin gets angry.)

You...you goddamn sonuvabitch!

Why!? Why did you do that!? She was just a sweet lil thing, she never e'en hurt a fly! She was a spot of sunshine in this dark place, and you...you gone and blow her head off! For what? Cause ya felt like it? Don't gimme all that bull, ya backstabber! She believed in ya, believed that ya had some good in that black hole you call a soul. Me, I was willin' ta give you a chance, but only because she begged me to. God damn it, she was worth more than your mangy hide will ever be, and the Devil take me but I swear that I'll make you pay for it!

Ya gone done it now, ya snake. Go ahead and laugh, but I'm through playin' nice. I'm gonna send you slitherin' back ta Hell where ya belong!

Forgot to mention, his knowledge in Chemistry allows him to make simple chemical concoctions. So far, all he's learned is how to imitate the Demoman's mines, some weak acids and good cleaning solutions. However, if he's taught how to make something by someone else, he should be able to pick it up with sufficient practice.
